It was plaited the correct side and they were left in for a few days (as if you were doing normal plaits for showing but without rolling them up).

My old NF gelding didn't used to have it on the wrong side...he had soo much it was on both and he had a lovely central parting lol because he had such a heavy mane i thinned the right side of it and after having it regularly plaited due to comps for a few weeks there was enough weight to hold it on the right side unplaited but in the winter when i did less shows it was just too much hassle so i gave up in the end!! The next horse i had hers laid completely on the wrong side and i just made it look pretty on the wrong side save fussing about trying to change. Its easier with longer manes and much easier with TB/ fine type manes... not as easy with course native type manes or those that are pulled shorter :)

Thanks all. I've tried plaiting but whilst it lasts for a bit, it always goes back over and ive left plaits in for months.
I have a section C and a D I'd like to show so would like their manes to be on the correct side permanently if possible.

Faracat - beautiful horse - (and others who have said about plaiting) did the mane stay over permanetly or was it just a temporary fix?

I managed to train my mare's mane over to the correct side by plaiting. Also used a neck rug, ensuring all the hair was laying on the correct side and she wore that at night. She has quite a long mane, but it used to be pulled short but she looks better with it long and it was easier to tame when long. But the plaiting seemed to work for her and it's stayed over there now :)

I'm in the middle of trying. Left the mane to get a bit longer over the winter and now plait it and leave it most the week under a neck cover. On week 3 and it was looking better this weekend and stayed flat on the right side and wass only slightly high at the crest by the end. Going to give it a bit longer then start to thin and shorten.

You may manage it with careful pulling and plaiting it over. I've given up with my youngster and just plait it over for shows - she is a free spirit and like her mane to have the 'wild child' look.

My mare came with half her mane on the correct side and half sporting an attractive centre parting. I've managed to get it all to lie on the correct side. I kept it fairly long so there was weight in it and basically just combed it to the correct side every day and damped it down. Combing it a lot with a mane comb will thin it a bit too which also helps. I waited until it was getting more obedient before I pulled it, although it is still too long really. Laying the mane and then putting on a neck rug helps too.

I agree with the plaiting and it was a permanent fix for me. If it almost over but just need it tidier on show rings day hairspray or/and gel works wonders! Im not sure about marking down but certainly your overall presentation wont be as smart with a bad hair day!

I wish there wouldn't be a 'correct' side for a mane to fall for the purpose of showing. It is stupid IMO. I don't currently show so don't train manes. I pull to the side they naturally fll. I think it must be uncomfortable for the hors to always have its mane pulled to the opposite side to what is natural. But I quite understand the OP's dilemma, and have had to train manes to the right side in the past. I plaited the mane and used a neck cover.

Do as you have already done. Warning though, if you pull the mane too short it will just stick up like a bog brush once you take the plaits out

It helps if before you plait that the mane is totally clean and wet then as you plait gently pull down on it; it helps if you're a little lower than the mane, don't stand on a stool and be above it as you'll naturally raise it. Re do every week until you are satisfied the job's done but don't leave it in for longer than a week before re-doing and make sure your plaits are moved up a half each time so you don't get the same hairs in the same plait all the time.

you need to have a mane of enough length. shampoo thoroughly to remove grease. then add a little hair gel and plait over for a few days. unplait comb through. if it starts to pop up again, repeat shampoo, gel plait to desired side. it is quite often a work in progress. but do pull to the side you are going to plait too.

It's stayed over and hasn't tried to go back at all. I think that it helps that he has a very long mane.

I once tried to train a mane that had been hogged and that took about two years to finally lay nicely the correct side ( ) because until it grew to decent length there was no hope - it just stuck up punk style. ;)
