Mane yellow at the roots??

Just wondered if any else has this with their horse or knows what it is?

Harry has a half white, half black mane and I've noticed that the roots on the white bit look yellow. On closer inspection, they're not obviously yellow but when you stand back, it looks really yellow... Hope you can understand what I mean.

I've given his mane a good wash but that made no difference, so wondering if it's something more sinister??

I'll get some photos when I go the yard later. There is some dry flakey skin but not masses and it yellowness seems to be more at the root of the hair than on the skin.

Diamond white is great, this is shampoo I use normally :) But it didn't remove the yellow last time I used it....
 
My coloured cob has this at the roots of the white bits of his mane. I've washed with various shampoos including dermoline etc and it doesnt make a difference. I thought maybe mites but he's never rubbed his mane. (He gets feather mites which he scratches alot so it can't be that). The vet gave me frontline for his feathers mites so i put a bit on his mane last week to see what happens. I'll keep you posted!
 
Oh great, glad I'm not the only one lol!! Tbh it wasn't like this in the winter so I wonder if it's something to do with the sun that causes it? He does have pink skin where his mane grows but it's not sunburnt or anything, so maybe that's just the colour their natural oils and grease goes in the summer....?
 
Ah ok, think I know what it is... buttercups!! We have loads in our field, I'm told they always do but the horses don't eat them. But I think he's been rolling in them so hence the yellow.

Eqinimity - do you have butter cups in your field?
 
It's sebum (skin grease) from the skin - perfectly normal. It's just much more obvious because the hair is totally white and the skin pink. They produce more sebum when the skins irritated, so either sunburn (my pony gets a little burnt where his impressive white double mane splits) or flies. My pony has very little during the winter (although he's usually so covered with you can't see his mane roots!) and much more during fly season. It should wash out but will be back again by the next morning.
 
Ah thanks Kallibear :) I did think it came back awful quick when I washed it and it does look greasy. My cob's mane tends to split too so the pink skin in sometimes exposed and flies defo around so I'll just make sure I'm keep him covered in bug repel stuff and the neck on his fly rug :)
 
Yes we do have quite a few buttercups but i'd have thought if it was that his white feathers would be yellow too?? It is probably just the oils from his skin. I’ve had him 8 years and he’s had the yellowing the whole time. It’s never seemed to bother him though, just me being a clean freak. Interesting to know it's not just him though!
 
Ditto on the clean freak, I get told I'll wash him away with the way I clean him every couple of weeks, but he's a hairy boy and his mane and tail get soooo greasy, far easier to brush when washed and conditioned hehe
 
I spend ages keeping him nice - but when they're clean they look gorgeous! Yours is lovely! Here's mine (and my other slighlty less hairy boy)...

Awww they are lovely!! Your coloured looks a bit finer that mine but check out that feather and mane! How old is he?? Harry's only 2 so keep wondering how much hairier he's going to get lol!
 
He's 14 now. I've had him since he was about 6/7. I'd never seen a horse with such feathers! Little did I know how much of a pain in the ar*e they could be though :-) He's being broken to drive at the moment and I think he's going to look fab in his cart. I really do love coloured traditionals now even though I ended up with him by accident really!
 
Stinky is the same, plus I use a lot of oil in my spray on his mane so it goes get oily fairly quickly.

All I do is mix 1/4 each of tresume, green fairy, arial excel gel and vanish liquid with a pinch of equine blue and wash away using plenty of warm water - lovely and white in no time. Don't do this too often as it is fairly harsh and use plenty of conditioner afterwards.
 
Can you use that on the feather as well as the mane and tail?? I've tried equine blue, diamond shampoo, tresemme all individually but still didn't get him nice and white on the yellow bits lol. Got another show on June 12th so 3rd time lucky, maybe?!

Did he have that much feather when you got him? My boy has loooaaddsss already, starts at his knees, had to trim those because they're sooooo hairy lol! Is he ridden already or just breaking him for driving? I reckon he'd be able to pull a fair amount of weight, hoping to eventually do the same with Harry.

Yes he was pretty much the same back then. I'd imagine yours will keep getting hairier until he's about 3 or 4 so he could end up very fluffy indeed!

Yes he's ridden, mainly just a happy hacker but he can pop a jump and would do a decent dressage test. He'll also be shown this summer all being well. He's quite flashy and i'd always wanted to break him to drive but have only just got round to buying a cart and had a very kind offer of help from an experienced driving chap who is currently horse-less. You should definately drive yours if you can, it's so much fun and it means family members, unhorsey OHs etc can get involved too. Watch this space, i'll post some pics of his progress.
 
i realise this thread might be quite old as i googled to get this thread. but my mare

has got a yellow and flakey base to her mane and i was wondering if it was harmful or showing signs of a problem but from what ive read on here it doesnt seem to be.

also i used mane and tail on her for the first time just over a week ago and i was wondering if this might be why shes come up with it.
