I am looking at options for winter lighting for a 45 x 25 manege. Has anyone got the ones from the Retractable Lighting Co or have any suggestions please.

Hi, we are doing this at the moment although my husband would probably be better placed to provide more details. We found companies doing retractable poles very expensive. So we are getting lightweight aluminium scaffolding poles and screwing them on to fence with a clamp to allow pole to pivot. We'll attach the light to a bracket and secure to pole. The pole won't retract as such but is lightweight enough you can drop it down on pivot and secure on fence so it can lie horizontal. We've priced this at between £60-£80 per pole. We saw another school with same set-up which is working great.

If you have planning permission for lighting them there are plenty of options however if you haven't then you are a little limited. I was at a yard without planning permission for arena lights so I bought extension leads & two pairs of site lights.

I put one in one corner & a second in another corner, adjusted the lamps & they illuminated the arena. Yhey are height adjustable & also the lamps pivot. The lighting wasn't sufficient for jumping but was enough to school your horse. I put them away when schooling was over. :)

Can you tell me where to buy the bracket to attach pole to fence as I am struggling to find one

We haven't got outs yet but it's a scaffolding bracket called a Stair Tread Coupler. You should be able to pick it up from a local scaffolding suppliers. Then you just screw the light in and angle it as required.

Sorry mis-read for the pole to fence mount we are drilling hole through the pole and fence, get a threaded bar/long enough bolt to go through with a nut at each end to hold in place. Then you need a board retaining clip attached to post (quite low down) so when you have the pole upright you latch it in and it will hold pole firm.

Hope that makes sense.

That's just what I need, thanks Toby Z
