Having invested in a high neck Mark Todd turnout rug, I was annoyed to find it was breaking off Star's mane. While the weather has been milder, I've been folding the neck under the rug as recommended by a poster on HHO (Thankyou). She's got a clipped neck so needs some protection when the temperatures drop again.

Will a Snuggy Hoods Turnout hood give protection to the mane whilst keeping her warm? They are lined with a 'mane saver' apparently......

Yes, I think it would help. They are nice & silky on the inside & no seams to rub. What size are you looking for I have one needing a new home.....

I'm interested in buying a hood, but due to the cost, are they generous in sizes? as have bought an XL roma type and only just fits my 16.1 and says it will fit a 17.1. Are snuggy hoods more generous?
Sorry to hijack your post!

I have a M/L fo my horse who is a 16.1hh T.B x B.W.B but looks more T.B. This fits him fine but you have to remember they are meant to be a snug fit so they dont move or slip over the face. When I first went to try it on I really thought it wasn't going to fit but once you mess around a bit it is fine. I would advise going for a zip one as well as I couldnt get the pull on one over his head and mess about at the same time, it was that moment of blindness that he hated.

I found that the best way to get a non zip hood on was to scrunch it up - like putting on stockings (remember them!), that way to moment of blindness is momentary. If the hor is very tall use a step the first few times and if you can have a helper. That way I've managed to use very basic hoods on 17.2's.

Buy two - if they get greasy or dirty then they do rub the mane. I have two so when they are being used in winter to keep her warm, one can be washed and dried while the other is being worn.

They sell seconds on Ebay quite frequently, one of mine is a second and its absolutly fine.

Hmmm... I tried the Snuggy Turnout Hood on my TB x for one day (before putting it on my Welsh D who managed to riggle out of it when the zip bust that same night within hours of buying it!!). The TB x has that sort of mane which can be rubbed - the SH was on just for a few hours that day and when I took it off his mane was a shambles! It had been rubbed about in all the wrong directions and looked ridiculous! But then again, I dont think it rubbed hair out as such, just rubbed it up the wrong way.

I had a snuggy hood on merlin to keep him clean and it stripped out half of his mane

It was washed weekly and everything.... mane conditioner etc.

I think he just has a weak mane..... bristly but weak
