Okay I am facing even worse temps after the big move, how do people cope with temps between 30-40- using heavy weight rugs with necks on all the time and keeping the mane looking good?

Last year both of my two horses rubbed out their manes a little up from the wither area. Taking off neck covers for any length of time is not really an option in these temps with a blood horse.

Can anyone come up with a suggestion, a hood under the rug that could help or some sort of a secret I don't know?

I have ordered a normal sort of hood for both Gino and the pony this year, some one had mentioned one that ties over the mane area which helped reduce mane loss on their horses. However I have not seen any of this type.

Please help, I plan to have the big boy out competing this winter and would rather him not look an idiot with quarter of his mane missing :o

In my experiance the only way to keep a full mane is to not have a full-neck rug. I have tried many makes over the years with full-necks and they all rubbed out the bottom section of mane. So now I only buy standard-neck or half-neck rugs. I do have easily rubbed horses though (Arab, Anglo and a TB).

I've never had a problem with FAL hoods rubbing.

I use Horseware Duo, Horseware Rambo/Rhino, both the horses last Winter used these rugs and still the manes fell out. I am thinking to try the new Horseware Optimo this year.

I use Horseware as I have a trade account with Horseware and can buy everything at 50% less, it doesn't make sense to me to go out and pay full price for a different brand. Unless of course I was to stock Fal also, as the brand is not known in Norway probably not the best move. Also hasn't Fal just gone into administration along with Slumberdown and Loveson the sister companies? I am sure I read that in BETA's last trade magazine...

Faracat I think you could be correct, new horse is a 17.3h AE Sports Horse. I think I may have to keep the necks off at night in the stables. The stables have insulated floors, ceilings and walls and we are installing an industrial blow fan heater. Hopefully being neck cover free overnight will help the situation :)

I have the same problem with my mare, though her mane doesnt get rubbed out, it just falls out! I hog my mare now!!!

Well some horses just lose their manes anyway. My boy always loses half his mane in the winter time. So last year when he was injured I decided not to use any rug with a neck or half neck and guess what? His bloomin mane still fell out! It just died and came out in clumps. I have a friend that has the same problem too, so not always the neck cover. I think sometimes if they get too hot this does not help and the mane comes away.

I have found that if I keep my boys mane glossy then not so much of it rubs, i'm not sure if it will work fir everyine though. Last year I had a Shires combo on him practically all the time and his mane was great!

Good Luck!

I think I am going to have to watch them this year, normally I clip but due to the fact it will be the new boys first Winter I shall probably keep him unclipped for the first Winter season (dependant on how he is with competing). If they are unclipped this year I probably would be fine using normal neck rugs.

i have heard of this product called megatek which strengthens the mane hair so i may try this this year - i use horsewear and the rhino and rambo wug have both thined my pony's mane.
