I have owned my traditional black cob for two years and she has never had much of a mane, over the past year i have grown it out (was hogged) with no lotions or potions and it has come on really well (fifteen inchs) but i noticed through the winter the lower section started to become quite fine due to her rug rubbing so i stopped putting neck rugs on her and thought that would be the end of it but unfortunately she has now lost half her mane :( she lives out 24/7 and is on complete electric with no where to rub, the only thing i have seen is one of the youngsters grooming her in the same place all the time.....but this is a natural process so is unlikely to cause her loss of mane? Any tips on growing a mane and a good way of protecting it? plz plz help as i really done want to have to hog her again :( xx

i'd guess its the youngster rubbing it out - i dont know what its called but you can get some lotion spray to put on the mane that tastes horrible to deter other horses from chewing the mane out

i dont know is this will work for you but a horse used to pull out my friends horses mane, we sprayed stuff on the mane, fly spray is a good one, it might be worth plaiting? the other horse is less likely to pull on the mane then...othetr than this im not too sure on keeping manes, mine a tb so has short thin mane lol hope this helps anyway :)

I think that the neck cover was probably to blame even though the mane continued to fall out after you stopped using it. They can go very tight when the horse puts it's head down to graze.

Thanks all,
Her mane is all plaited now and i have invested in shapleys MTG to see if that helps the growth but i will deffinately try fly spray to see if it stops the youngster grooming her mane as i dont think thats helping any growth that may be occuring. Wish me luck :)
