is it mange or something?
hmmmm?

Could be if you have foxes in the garden. The vet will be able to advise you (hopefully). My dog had mange for a year and various vets gave us shampoos etc on the assumption it was eczema. It wasn't until we insisted on seeing the head vet that we got a proper diagnosis. It cleared up quickly with Stronghold, which is worthwhile using regularly as a preventative now urban foxes are so common. (It doesn't kill ticks though, so I have to use Frontline in the summer.)

mange is balding patches and dog will be very itchy. the skin has a yeasty smell. If there is what you think is flea dirt, knock some of it onto white paper and drop a few drops of water onto the dirt - if a reddish brown colour appears around the dirt then it is flea dirt and your dog must have fleas (if you've seen them or not!). Treat with a decent brand of flea treatment such as frontline (or something from vet). you also need to treat any other pets and the house itself. There is a household spray we sell in practice called Vetkem. It can be sprayed on carpets, upholstery and pet beds (do test patch first). it is important that pets and house are treated otherwise no sooner have you treated your pet, the fleas will be back. If the dirt does not turn reddish-brown then i would suggest seeing the vet. If he/she says its mange and its only a mild case then stronghold should clear it up, if its more severe then we usually do skin scrapes/biopsies to confirm the type of mite and then choose necessary treatment from there (usually a very smelly bath solution!)
Hope that helps! would go down the flea treatment route first of all as that is one of the most common causes for what your describing.
