Manky haylage query...?

I use big round bale haylage. Why do some of them have one side that is really crap? They are adequately wrapped with no holes, stored off the ground and covered.

Someone has suggested they are left on the ground too long before being wrapped so get damp......as the haylage is damp(ish) anyway would that make any difference?

Just wondering......as fed up with throwing money on the muck heap!

I find that the bales at the bottom of the stack even on pallets and covered get wet. I know they are meant to be weather proof and mine are wrapped with enough plastic but the water still gets in if they have been out in rain for a couple of months. I had a bale of Horsehage and that was wet on side where it had rained!

Ours used to go manky at my last yard because rats and mice were eating through the plastic and letting the wet in!
Some of the hayledge bales were that bad we couldn't use them

Are they stored in their sides or ends? (Ends are best).

When they lie on their sides they can get a bit manky, but tbh if it is baled at the right time, it should be fine.
