YO opened a new bail today, and its manky its mostly black and is the most vile smell ever, anyway i told him i dont want to feed my horse that and said he should open a new one anyway he said it was fine, even tho roxy wouldnt touch the stuff. he said its only bad when all of it is white, is this true? im going to tell him again to open a new one and see what he says.

eeeuuu sounds like it's gone off and turned into silage of sorts. Having said that if it is that manky then even cows wont eat it! If it's sort of slimy and very wet then its a no no for the nags. It should be like hay and smell sweet. I'd get him to open another bale asap. That one may have had a hole in it which will have obviously let the air in turing it putrid

Forgot the white mould aint too good either but if it's not in big solid "blocks" and is shaken out it's not usually as detrimental.

It sounds awful be very careful don't feed anything you are not happy with and it sounds like your horse is saying the same.
The results can be terrible please only feed best quality

White is mould whereas black is bacteria.

If it smells ok its generally safe to be fed, however anything that smells nasty or musty should definitely not be fed!

I tend to pull off the white bits, even when they don't smell as try and keep the mould away from the neds.

In haylage, if the powdery stuff is white then it is generally yeast, not mould, so quite safe.....however if it is black then I would say you have silage on your hands and NOT haylage. My advice would be to get rid.

Yes black or green and smelly [nasty] is a no no. White mould as said above is yeast and is the result of the 'sugar' content of the grass and is ok. Good haylage smells like pear drops! when it smells like that i could become a halage sniffer!!!
Bad haylage should not be fed as it can have some really nasrty bugs in it like the botulinus bacterium. Very nasty.
