For me, it's bog standard manners that the dogs stay in the car until I get them out (not asking people who use crates as that obviates the need to teach them not to jump out). My dog walker took them out with my OH last week to prep her for a solo walk in the woods today and she was amazed that they don't jump out of the car when the boot is opened. That's what we've always taught/reinforced-I don't want them hit by a car coming into the carpark, running up to loose dogs or making someone brake a bit quick. She's sent me a cute picture of the three of them waiting in her car. Do your lot wait to be told? I imagine some of you with bigger dogs might have ramps etc.

When I owned a working springer spaniel many years ago he always waited, ditto my friend who has four working lab bitches. Saw a man recently who opened the hatchback and just managed to grab the collar of his big dog as it spontaneously launched itself out. Owner ended up on his knees on the track. Painful and dangerous.

I see a lot of people pop the boot in newer cars and the dogs are out and running around before the owners have even exited the vehicle. In car parks.
I couldn't do that to a dog I liked.

Mine are in individual boxes anyway, they have to wait until their collars/lines are on before I move aside and they can get out.

Mine is on a seat belt thing attached to her harness in the back seat so she can't go anywhere so I clip her lead on before I unclip that. She still does try to make a break for it but it's one of the many things we are patiently working on-she can't get out, but I need her to stay to be less wriggly.

There is a special place in hell for people who do this in beauty spots/nature reserve car parks and let the dogs barrel across the car park and up the footpath, heedless of anyone in the way.

I once dog sat for some naughty dogs who launched themselves the moment you opened the boot. When the owners returned they were incredulous when they sat back and waited, I suspect they thought I beat them until the dogs turned themselves inside out with joy at the sound of my voice!

Mine both wait until told they can jump out. Jem was very reluctant when we first got her to jump out as her owner only ever allowed her show dogs to go up and down via a ramp, they weren't even allowed to jump onto a chair or anything, she soon learned to overcome that obstacle to a few home comforts though. Jessie I dont quite trust as she can be very hyper to get out and rush around so I always make sure her lead is clipped onto her harness before she even thinks about making a jump for it without permission.

I do agree it is very much a safety issue, all our dogs have always sat quietly until told they can jump out except my little Patterdale I had to have her firmly under control and lift her out the passenger seat in my arms, she would shoot off like a rocket otherwise even if the other dogs were waiting obediently for the signal.

I have a tailgate guard but mine still sit and stay after I open the door, until they get the signal to jump out. So dangerous if they just pile out and run off.
I can also chose them one at a time, they never know who is going to be first or last. All good training and fun to do!

Mine are seat belt clipped in but when we had the crates they were told to wait until they had their leads clipped on. It wasn't an automatic wait though if I'm honest, not through lack of trying or training, but they were never allowed to just launch out of the car.

Mine are in crates and as I have a berlingo I slide the door open and they come out of their crate and wait until the lead is on and they are given the ok to get out. My 2 terriers are good but my lurchedr puppy is still learning the drill so I have to hold his collar and clip the lead on and then he is told ok…he will get there eventually

Mine waits until told. It’s just as important as not running out of the front door as soon as it’s opened.

The front door thing was a bit slow, but mostly, if we opened the front door, they were going through where the missing panel was into Aunty B’s garden at our behest. The puppies were a bit funny about going in the car for ages, so I wouldn’t trust them to go straight in the boot for a while. I’m delighted to say they now wait at the door. We’re not on a busy road, fortunately.

Ivy is attached by her harness to her seatbelt so she isn't loose in the back but we also have taught her to wait. Although yesterday she/I did forgot and she ended up half in/half out still attached. Whoops! She is also often keen to get in the car so now working on 'wait' so she doesn't launch herself in when I'm not ready!
