Hi All

my dilemma as short as i can.... mare injured 5th dec outside right hind hock. Now where this injury is its very difficult to heal. She has good granulation tissue (tendon sheath was exposed) now I am struggling with a scab as she keeps knocking it, rolling in stable laying down etc.

She is still lightly bandaged which does allow air & so does scab.Then just as i think "yes this is looking great" she knocks part of it off and feel i am back to square 1. The wound is slowly getting smaller.

I have heard good things about this special honey. My farrier recommended it to me yesterday. He said it heals wounds in half the time, has its own antibacterial bodies alsong i use the 15+ version.

So have you used it?? was it good??
 
Hi I used it on my TB for a wound he had on his elbow. It did help to debride the wound and gave a really good granulation layer. After that it was just a case of letting the wound do its thing and shrink ,until it disappeared.Also worth mentioning that check the granulation layer is flush with the surrounding skin,it will not heal if you have proud flesh. Also We use Manuka Honey a lot at work on wounds (small animals ) and really does help with healing. Hope this helps
 
hiya thanks - yes its flush she did initially have proud flesh as predicted by vets which they removed . It was heavily bandaged again for afew weeks for it to granulate and was lovely underneath when the big bandage came off. since then she has had the lighter one on allowing it to scab over underneath.

So im hoping its just going to help it along and form a good scab quickly and with some hope it will strengthen and stay on! thanks for your reply
 
It will heal eventually ,but I know it is really frustrating ,especially as you see it every day it probably does not look any different ,but before you know it it will be healed. Wishing a speedy recovery.
 
A good place to buy is from health food shops as they often sell the one you need ,it will state on there that it is ok for wounds.Obviously at work we use the medical one ,it really does do the job.
 
Yes, its good. it worked quickly on severe thrush and I used it on a wound I had. Not only did it work but it soothed the wound immediately.

Years ago, in nursing we used to put it on pressure sores before the first honey dressings were made.
 
Its brilliant, we had a horse shred its front legs on a wall trying to get out of the field. WE washed the wounds with salt water each day and then applied mannuka honey approx 3 times a day. Healed with no white hairs in about 6 weeks.
 
You can also use paw paw ointment if you can't get honey.

My boy was being a tool in the paddock and took a chunk out of his coronet and hoof capsule, I cleaned it with betadine solution and smothered it in paw paw before bandaging it with vetwrap. 4 days layer the cut (which was really deep) had pretty much healed up, there was a nice amount of granulation and it was healing well. Now (7days later) the bandage is off and I cleaned it this morning, smothered it in a layer of paw paw and popped him back in the paddock. It should heal with no scar. :)

My mare cut her hind tendon about 2.5 months ago - huge hole in her leg and it kept scabbing over but wasnt healing properly ... had to wait for sklin to grow back which is just has done :o

My vet said to use manuka honey with a gel he gave me (will find name if you want it), used big dressing pads that wont stick to the wound then pressure bandaged using about 3 layers for added support (dressing pad, bandage, fluffy cotton wool, more bandage, more cotton wool, more bandage then self stick bandage)

Hope all goes well and the above may not work depending on the location but worth a try :D

I do believe there is a 'heel' version - not seen it before but perhaps a little more hock shaped??

It can have great results. My sister was in hospital with a horrible injury and it was treated with Manauka honey over a period of several weeks and it healed better than anyone expected.
 
Hi, have you seen my horses injury? its on here under leg injury graphic pictures, if you see his pictures from start to today (we are halfway thro recovery) we are using Manuka Honey, its brilliant, i got the large jar and its done loads and loads of bandage changes over 10 weeks, i have strength 18 you can get it from holland and barrett online if you don't have one local enough, its easier to use if the jar is put in a bit of warm water first to soften it up. Good luck with your horses injury xx
