Hi, my horse has slight liver probs new blood tests in another month out in field now after a hard season hunting my friend says Manuka honey is good for liver and to give him 2 tablespoons a day any of you ever had anything to do with this honey, thanks.

Hmmm.... well never heard of it. Did a quick search and it says about it:

"Manuka Honey is the type of manuka honey which has the unique naturally occuring antibacterial property known as UMF®, an antibacterial property not found in any other honey (including most manuka honey). This special property is effective against most bacteria including the very resistant helicobacter pylori(the bacteria which causes most stomach ulcers) and staphylococcus aureus. Research has shown the UMF® property also makes UMF Active Manuka Honey very effective for stomach ulcers and gastritis and for topical use such as skin ulcers, wounds, burns, sore throats, acne, eczema and cracked skin. "

I used Manuka honey when my boy had a problem in his pharynx - the internal structures had become disorganised and he had terrible ulceration. I don't know if it did the trick or not as I only used one pot in addition to many other things and it took him a whole 9 months to get better. None of the vets thought he would ever recover, but he did!

The manuka honey is quite expensive and I don't remember it being good for the liver. Isn't milk thistle the recommended herb for liver problems?

A pony in our yard has just been prescribed milk thistle for liver problems - seen as changes in bloods. The milk thistle comes in tablets and she has several per day in feed. I've heard lots of good things about it from all over the place as a liver 'detox'.

Never heard of the honey, so can't help there I am afraid!

Only ever heard of it being used for the treatment of skin wounds. I think when taken orally it is a general "pick-me-up". It will be expensive to feed if feeding 2 tablespoons a day, I would try milk thistle, I think I'm right in saying you can buy it in dried form from equus health.

I was advised by a friend to take manuka honey myself for repeated stomach pain which she thought sounded like the start of an ulcer. It was brilliant.I believe that it has strong antibacterial properties but don't know how it could affect the liver.

Apparently it is very big news in New Zealand. I work with someone who used to live there and said it was a bit of a miracle product - she mentioned it because I was explaining about my horse's mud fever.

I'm told it comes in different "factors" (a bit like sun cream) and you can only use certain factors for horses, not sure what they are but make sure you by stuff aimed at horses, rather than for people.
