Any one got any experience with mares reacting well the Regumate then having marbles

Not sure what to do
Mare is lovely on Regumate - horrid without looks like she will be on it long term

Don't have experience of regumate as we chose to go down the marbles route. Our pony wasn't nasty she just wouldn,t jump whilst in season and marbles did the job. We were warned that they do not know the long term effect of marbles on the womb, so shouldn,t use if we intended to breed from her, but for us they were cheaper and easier than regumate.

F was on Regumate last year she had a marble inserted just over a month ago, she has still come into season but it is very slight and she hasn't had any of her normal problems.

First the vet needs to scan as the marble has to be inserted after ovulation when the cervix is open. F was at the verts, has mild sedation (she doesn't like vets) and was stood in stock. Marble pushed through cervix (she was very tight) and that was it. Sedation was so slight she was able to travel home straight away. haven't had the bill yet!

I was on a breeding course a couple of weeks ago and regumate was discussed in some detail - I think you run the risk of future breeding issues if your mare is on regumate long term, you also have to be VERY careful when handling it. Mares can expell marbles, so it wouldn't be very effective if this happened!

Below is a passage from an article written by Jos Mottershead, the article is more related to the use of Regumate in the pregnant mare rather than to control seasons, but relevant all the same:

Just to add a little more food for thought, and to raise both awareness and alarm levels a little higher, the potential impact on the human hormonal cycle in the event of accidental absorbency of the drug through the skin should be considered. To confuse the issue more, many people who are aware of this problem make it a practice to only dose their mares while wearing latex gloves. Unfortunately, latex will allow the passage of Regumate through it, although not as easily as skin. Hence, once the Regumate has been spilled on the gloves and soaked through, it is then more easily absorbed by the skin than being able to pass back through the glove. Essentially this practice creates a "Regumate patch" similar to a birth control or nicotine patch for the wearer! It is somewhat puzzling why the paste version of the product, available in Canada, is not available for use in the US. It significantly reduces the potential for accidental human exposure. Next, the use of any progestin in a mare with a uterus of an unknown pathogenic status, or one that is known to have had pathogenic inflammatory issues in the past may stimulate a uterine infection. Progestins suppress uterine immune response something that is indicated on the package insert of Regumate. A final point to ponder is that it has been suggested that use of Regumate in the pregnant mare may actually suppress endogenous secretion of progestins, thereby creating a dependency for supplementation in the mare. Could we in fact be creating Regumate addicts by the use of the drug in the mare? It appears that it may be so

I would want to speak to a reproduction specialist before deciding to put my mare on Regumate and make sure that I was fully aware of all the side-effects
