I have never paid livery for a foal until it is weaned but then again most of mine have been weaned at about 6-7 months of age so that was when livery started
I think it would depend on type of livery. If it was DIY i wouldnt charge any different as its still only 1 box, but if it was full livery i would charge for 1 box but extra for bedding feed ect. I dont think you could charge twice for 1 box.
Depends if it was a huge box - and diy - then i would only charge the normal rate for that stable, but would want a time limit on the foal being in the box - say 9 months to a year.
If it was full livery then sorry i would charge for 1 and a half times normal price plus an extra 3 bales of straw or 2 bales of shavings a week- logic being the stable is paid for with the horse... but your mucking out for two, feeding hay for 1.5 horses and doing waters for 1.5 horses.... again i would expect a limit on time and to me 9 months to 12 months would be acceptable.,
Yes, if DIY, per box, if more then perhaps 1.5 times charges. I would be lenient if horse(s) going to stay with you post weaning, and plans to wean in next few months. You also have to consider turnout, they would need seperate field etc.
If they have plans to wean soon & both will be staying then maybe just charge for 1 if diy, 1 & 1/2 if part/ full. If weaning will be a few months or they aren't both staying charge for 2. Otherwise you run the risk of anyone with a horse & small pony questioning why they have to pay for two.
If DIY I think it would be pretty mean to charge for two prior to weaning in the next month or two.
It's not unusual to wean a bit older in awful weather like this.
If full I would charge for two, a foal that age can get through a surprising amount of feed and forage and the box will be a lot of work mucking out. If part and your mucking out I'd charge an extra 50%.
Im on diy at £35 per week for stable and grazing. There would be no adjustment to current grazing with a foal (individual turnout) so I wouldnt expect to pay any more. However we pay £10 per week for ad lib hay. That should be at least 1.5 times and similar if bedding included. If its full livery then at least 1.5 times normal if not nearly double as two staff members may be required for handling.
My mare is in foal and the agreement we have the yo is foal is free until 3 months and then £10 a week extra till weaned (normal livery is £25 a week) when s/he will go to normal livery price
where i am we dont pay anymore until they are weaned in fact the yard owner told me to leave them together as long as possible so he would not have to charge me a few years back.
realistically though i think the most you can do is charge £5-10 per week more for grazing if they are out overnight-otherwise you are charging for the sake of it on DIY
The foal will be using the fields. Running and playing, whilst lovely to watch, does cut the ground, plus it needs to be accounted for when working out numbers.
I have a seven month old foal and I would expect to pay for him.
