Is this a commom thing? Over the years (8yrs) of having my mare I've often tried to pin point what effects her mood swings... her temperment is most defiantley effected by starch & mollasses in the diet however for the last year and a half I seem to have controlled this as best possible on a WE diet.

However her mood swings still appear but they are "NOT" when she is "IN SEASON" she is the most loving affectionate enjoyable ride ever when she is in season but out of season she is a raging bull!!!

Any ideas on what i can use/do to help her settle down for the days she is out of season??

Hi,
my mare is quite huggy when in season, but a grumpy oversensitive cow coming into season! She has as little sugar as possible (no molasses chaff and supplements), and is supplimented with magnesium, brewers yeast and seaweed. Some of her grumpyness is to do with being more sensitive aorund her belly, flanks and lower back. Being considerate with the work we do when she is sensitive, finding a super comfy girth, keeping her back good with a well fitting saddle and thin nuumed numnah - all help. She is worse if she is carrying a little extra weight - spring with sugary calorific grass is the worse as my darling mare turns into rather a witch for 2 months!!

Hi, my mare used to be the same. Was a baggage out of season, but when in season was fantastic. I had to have the vet out once as she had sore gums where the bit sat. The vet found a couple of teeth about to come through and said it was strange for a mare to have these teeth, usually found in geldings, so he thought she may have had a hormone inbalance. This could also explain her behaviour when in season. She was also a baggae to shoe. Most farriers in my area refused to do her. I had a young farrier come out who didn't know her. He was young good looking and had drowned himself in aftershave. My mare stood like a rock with a soppy expression on her face and rested her nose on him when she could, the tart!!
