FoxhillBelle noticed a small amount of blood on her mare this morning. Mare is 5yo and has never had a foal as far as we know.

Any ideas what it's likely to be?

Any chance she could have been covered?
The only time I have seen this is in a maiden mare that had been covered by a rather over enthusisatic and rough stallion. It happened straight after and then for about 12 hours after. Never alot of blood, but a few spots, and a bit of a trickle initially.
Hope that helps?

Not unless the riggy NF in the field next to hers managed to jump out and she knelt down for him. We did wonder about that but I can't see that the gelding would have been able to reach.

A friend of mine thought that her cob mare menstruated as she often found blood marks in her white tail.

She asked the vet about it and he said that often, in chunky horses such as hers, there are varicose type veins in their rear ends that leak a little at times, and that it was nothing to worry about. Just a cue to slim her down a little really.

Sounds like a varicose vein bleed to me - and it is more common in overweight or pregnant mares. If it's just a very small amount of blood, then no need to worry. If the problem persists - or the bleeting is more severe - talk to the vet about cautery of the offending veins.

Hi just wanted to say thanks to you all for your words of advice.

Both myself & dwi carried out a closer inspection (not for the faint hearted i must say, oooooh) and it looks as if she has been rubbing her tail which has then caused a slight cut on the inside of Belle's vulva.

Phew, my silly mare had me worried, thought i was in for a baby belle surprise.

Thanks all
