Mare died this afternoon.

Ulla Belle arrived in March on retirement livery. She was a big lump of a mare with a lovely laid back nature. She was SF, by Hidalgo De Riou out of Esterelle, and had made her mark on the sj circuit here in Italy.
This morning was like any other, she had her hay then was turned out with Tom. At !! am the blacksmith reshod her fores and she went into her box out of the heat. At 14.30 I was on the forum and heard a couple of bangs coming from the bottom boxes. I went to have a look and was confronted by blood-everywher, on the floor outside her box, down the door, on the outside wall-it was everywhere. I lcouldnt get into the box as she was down up against the door and was having what looked like convulsions-there was a huge pool of blood under and around her head and every breathe she made more was pumping out of her nose or mouth. It took me 20 mins to eventually talk to a vet and about an hour till one arrived! I kept praying that she would just quietly die but she didnt-she died an hour and a half after I found her in the most awful way. The vet did what she could but it was a lost battle from the start. It was probably mycosis in her gutteral pouch which led to a rupture of the carotid. It was absolutely horrific to watch and must have been more than a horrific way to go for her. Oh and friend are down dragging her out for the truck tomorrow. Poor poor Ulla

I feel quite shocked-she was completely normal this morning! Owner has since confirmed that she had in the past been a bleeder when worked hard. Sorry, had to tell someone

This was Ulla 10 mins after she arrived-I chucked her in the paddock to let her have a womble after her trip here. She was a lovely, lovely mare.

That's terrible. Poor you and poor Ulla Belle. We can only hope that she was out of it for some of the time. Really feel for you. She must have been a really lovely horse.

RIP Ulla Belle

Oh Mairi, how awful for you and Ulla.

Rest in Peace pretty lady

What a terrible experience for you... and so horrible for Ulla. It sounds like you reacted in a very responsible manner, and did all you could..... hugs to you.

Its the first time Ive witnessed it and I pray that it will be the last. I can still hear her trying to breathe while inhaling what was pouring out of her

My own vet was too far away to be of any use, another was way down in Tuscany and so on-the girl who came was an unknown quantity but did her best. She was sent by one of the other vets and came as fast as she could. The other problem we had was that the mare was violent and had such low blood pressure due to the loss of blood that the sedatives injected did nothing so sadly we could do very little for her. Oh is now trying to take her shoes off (as is required by the rendering plant) and it doesnt sound easy from the swearing I can hear. When Francesco (Bsmith) shoe's a horse his shoes stay on till Francesco comes back to reshoe him . aww rip girly .. hugs for you for having to experiance such a thing ....and what an ordeal for her too that must of been awful... for both of you i squeam at a paper cut so my heart goes out to you xxx

how awful for you to witness....the mare looks such a lovely girl

only last weekend friends at a polo match witness a pony having a heart attack and died next to their horse after being in the game

I am so sorry to hear that you lost her in such a tragic and violent manner.
I cannot imagin what it was like for you to find her like that

Such a horrible way for her to have gone as she looked like a lovely horse.
RIP

jeezzz, that sounds so horrific! There is nothing more gut wrenching than losing an animal, particularly if it's in a violent way. think everyone who keeps animals should also keep a gun, for any moments that may have suffering involved. My heart goes out to you, and as said, all is over now, remember the good things. I'm sure she knew hardly anything about it, nature is fairly handy at compensating for trauma. x
