i was lunging Missy today, when a horse who she hates was coming back from a hack. he was fine and totaly unphased by missy being lunged, but missy went really odd.

where i used to work, one of my rides was a young rig and he displayed similer actions when a horse went by as i was lunging him a few times. but she puts her tail, literally along her back, puts her head in the air, snorting but sounding more like some sort of lion? lol if that makes sence. and she does a fantastic looking trot. but why is she doing this? is she just flirting??

i can understand it from a stallion or even a geldings point of view but if anyone can tell me why shes had that half hour that would be lovely!

Mares are entire horses, just like stallions. I don't know if she was "flirting" or seeing the other horse off, but it's not unusual for a mare to get quite up in the air from time to time. Have you ever seen a couple of mares fight? I mean really fight, not just a few squealies. They back up to each other and hammer at each other, making terrible screaming noises, grunting and huffing, it's really scarey.

From your description it sounds as if she was just excited/startled and showing off a bit, kind of "look at me, I'm big, and strong, and if I need to I can run away pretty fast, but you aren't that frightening"

All my mares (and the gelding) do that kind of thing, head in air, tail over back, the floaty, boingy trot when they are just having a bit of a 'yeehaw moment' or have been startled, the one horse that very rarely does it is the stallion!

My daughter's mare is a VERY dominant mare and will show stallion like behaviour when encountering new horses to put them in their place, she stamps her fore leg and arches her neck and snorts at them.

yes mine often does! she can be very dominant - never threatens to kick with her backend towards humans but always strikes out in front and stands up. she does a lot of elevated trotting around, tail in the air neck arched snorting!

This is one of the babies, a 7mth weanling, she was snorting and boinging all over the place this morning, just because she could. Is this the sort of action you were describing?
