Turned my mare out today, when she came back in she was dripping in sweat - others at the yard said she had been galloping round the field for about 10-15 minutes before we got there to bring her in. She's due to foal until May. I have heard that in foal mares shouldn't get overheated? Does anyone know if this is true?

In principle, I wouldn't be overly worried - mine regularly galloped like a bat out of hell with her 2 year old daughter and TB gangster mate until a couple of weeks before giving birth - but that's her, she likes to let rip!

But, I would just say that if this isn't normal behaviour for her, then you need to keep a close eye on her. Maybe something spooked her, or she got upset because other horses got brought in before she did? Has she been stabled more than usual lately and found herself having some energy to release? If she does it again, perhaps you ought to speak to you vet.

Thanks, she hadn't been out in the field for several days because of mud/ice as she's recovering from a serious leg injury. She went out yesterday and was fine - thank goodness.
