Mare has been kicked leaving an open wound (pics a little eugh)

Looks more like the hair has been taken off rather than a wound that requires stitches, so cold hose to clean and keep swelling down daily, apply fuciderm or flamazine cream as you want it to start healing but not to dry out quickly, do this for 3/4 days then apply tetcin spray which will then dry it out. Turn out because movement will keep filling at bay.

:( probably not as bad as it looks. I would clean it thoroughly and then apply some honey. My vet told me to put honey (i used manuka) on a recent wound and it worked a treat. ;)

I've been warned to make sure that the honey is of a certain grade if using it. Manuka is brilliant stuff.

Last wound we had like that, I pink lotioned (as picked up some surface dust) and left well alone. I watch for cellulitus on anything open, but not too worried on anything else as long as wound is monitored unless on a bony bit. If instantly lame I'd call vets, if over a day I just watch and make sure it doesn't last more than a few days. I also would keep turned out, best to keep moving rather than stiffen up.
Plus watch personality, if a dramatic change I'd also have vet out for pain.
