I am new to posting on the forum and was after some advice about my mare.
I had her at the end of September last year as a rescue and therefore don't know anything about where she has been or any history. She has a full set of 2 year old teeth but believe she is turning 3 years this year. When she arrived she was wormed, vaccinated, trimmed and generally given time to fill out and put on condition. In January she looked great but I noticed her abdomen was a little odd shaped for a fat belly! My vet scanned her and confirmed she was in foal. There was a 6.5 cm separation of the placenta due to placentitis which we now have under control with no further separation. She was re-scanned a month later to confirm this and foal was alive and kicking. The mare has an abnormal shape to her pelvis, the floor has a ridge a bit like a helm of a boat thus narrowing the pelvic canal. She is doing really well and we have kept her quite lean to aid the delivery due to the narrow pelvis and all is well.
However, I am supposed to be away for a couple of days this weekend at my girlfriend's brothers wedding and will be leaving my mum in charge. My mum is great at the everyday duties but due to the possible complications above and the fact that neither of us have done this before is a little concerning.
I was wondering if someone could give me an idea when she might be due. So far she has been bagged up for 5 weeks on and off and consistently at the current size for 2 weeks. She is eating less, spends much more time lying down, occassionally flank watches, bites her side and kicks her belly. 72 hours ago her vulva slackened off and there was a clear/white discharge from her vulva which has stopped but she has been really sensitive and touchy over her back end since. She was really restless that night and really uncomfortable. She is very quiet and seems dull in her eyes. Foal is kicking and bouncing around like crazy and she appears to be carrying it lower in her abdomen now. Last night she was really settled again!
I was just wondering if any experienced breeders have any advice as to when she might be ready to pop? I watch her everynight on cctv from a caravan and have done for 4 weeks already. I have everything I need to hand, Im all ready but she isn't quite!
Thank you very much
