hi again, my friend recently put her pony in foal (2 weeks ago)
we saw my YO yesterday he's an old fashioned cornish man!!! we asked him how you know if they are in foal or not.......

he said Do Not Keep Her in with geldings as it can cause her to miss carry!!???? is this true? we've never heard of it before!!! my poor friends panicing as she has 2 geldings.
thanks guys xxx

My Mare is out on grass with geldings, she is currently in foal (about 2 months). Im not concerned about her she carried her last foal very well in the same circumstances. They can sometimes display signs of being in season in the early stages (Winking and urinating in front of the geldings). This does subside so dont worry.

Maybe I've just been particuarly lucky, but I find My mare is more distressed when seperated from her companions and is well known for jumping the fences. Not sure which is the bigger risk. She is now the only mare on my yard so would have to play out on her lonesome if I seperated her now.

They are most at risk between weeks 5 and 8 and the advice is definately to keep mares away from geldings if they are at all flirty or aggressive as it can lead to the mare reabsorbing.

She'll be due a scan soon anyway to check? Mine will be scanned on 18 and 30 days to make sure all is well... if she ever comes back into season that is!

My mare was out with 2 other mares and my gelding a couple of days after her first scan, we had no problems but Frankie is scared to death of her and runs away if she even looks at him which could make all the difference. Moving her on her own could cause her to become stressed which isnt good either! Can you put her with a wimpy gelding for company?

he he he both geldings are wimps!!!!!!!!! i think she's going to keep her as she is as we'd never heard of it before!! and asked a few people and they'd never heard of it causing mares to miss carry. xxxx

Yes, it can cause them to reabsorb unfortunately.

Best to keep them away until she has passed the 28 days mark, and longer if possible.
