Mare in season question ...

I bought my lovely pony in feb (she is 5 this year) - my first mare!

She was very grumpy last Saturday with the farrier and then came into season big time on Sunday. She has been fine to ride and handle, but it's a week later and she's still in season I think.

Do mares have a 'big' first season? she has spent the week squirting huge amounts of yellow stuff everywhere (euuugh) and being in love with a 12hh pony that she hated last week. She met my friends new mare today and was squirting as they were touching noses (I think she's confused!)

Is this normal for it to go on for so long? It's not really a problem as she is a laid back lady and no problem to ride, but it's all a bit messy.

They do often have a bit of a mega season for their first (and sometimes last) of the year. A week wouldn't be unheard of for a mega one...

I agree with the mega season. my mare usually does and falls in love with another mare. I pre empted it this year and started her early on magnesium, agnus castus and brewers yeast. I normally use Oestress but apparently these are the main ingredients and they seem to be working.
