Is it normal for a mare to be grumpy to be ridden when in season?

My mare is totally fine to do everything with (eating/drinking normally etc) last 2 days I noticed she's been in season, she's been grumpy to ride (fine to lunge etc, checked her back to see for pain but nothing obvious, chiropractor coming this week also) is it normal for them to be like that? I haven't had her long and my old mare never was in season when I had her on loan..

Also what colour should the pee be?

I will ring vet if needs be but she's totally herself apart from the riding, loves her feed!!

It's perfectly normal for a mare to be grumpy when ridden in season! Not all mares show they are in season or react to it but some do. Same as humans it's not comfy exercising on your period! And your not carrying a heck of a lot of weight on your back or being made to do things or go faster than you want to. This should be her last or 2nd last season (unless the weather does something freaky) and you should have a relatively normal mare for the rest of winter. It should also only last another day or two. Go easy on her when she is in season, she is a mare after all and we all know how peeved women get!

If you plan on competing her properly next year then talk to your vet about regumate and things like that at the end of winter so she can be on it before her seasons start if needs be.

Ah makes me feel much better!! I could only walk her (being led)/today it was that bad. Didn't want to get off straight away after being stupid so she doesn't get that as a bad habit!

I will ask vet for sure! Because she is not safe whatsoever :o

Our mare is 25 and was really naughty when my daughter rode her yesterday. She was unstoppable, charged at jumps, ears forward, then put in dirty stops, napped to her field mate. I've owned her for nearly 4 years, know her inside out and have never seen her like this before.
.Last week she was teaching novices how to canter in a big field in a group of other ponies and I had mothers in tears because she had given their children such confidence. If they'd seen her yesterday, they'd have run for the hills, she was like a thing possessed. She has never napped to another pony and until recently, had been a bit sluggish. I can only guess that she is in season and it is the last one of the year,so a bit worse than usual. We are at the cross country course tomorrow, I've had to borrow a gag for her or I won't see my daughter for dust.

Oh god! That sounds terrible!! Mine doesn't even let me on without rearing. She's been doing that peeing thing mares do when in season for past two days and rearing on those days, she has my heart broke worrying about her lol! Everyone does say I am overprotective of her haha
