A mare was left on Fair Hill with a broken pelvis. She was abandoned and put down by local vets. 300 cases of horse abuse, and thats just in the immediate area. God knows what happens on the way there, or the way out.

High time this repulsive affair was banned!! how can ANYONE justify keeping it going?

There's horse abuse going on up and down the country and not just by people who attend appleby fair. Sadly whatever happens there will always be a select few who ruin it with cruelty. You can go to any horse market and see cases of neglect and abuse.

most travellers have their horse's welfare at heart.
We have a kind of fair (well, they race around and trade them) every few months in the park next door. It's a case of how many horses they can fit in the back of a trailer lol, but it's all done in a nice way, the horses always appear well, and they have trotting races and buy and sell until some spoil sport phones the police, then they scarper.
Surely it;s better that trading is done in full public view than behind closed doors? Don't let people hide the abuse because if it's hidden nothing can be done.
Spindles farm anyone???

That's disgusting :(

However I agree with what another poster said, one case should not tar the rest, I know a few people that went up (to look round) and said many of the horses were in beautiful condition, up to weight, clean, good feet etc, you don't always get that at some livery yards.

However they did comment about the RSPCA officers, said there was a big group of young ladies, all just stood in one place chattering to each other, said if they had spent less time doing that and actually walking around keeping an eye of things, they might of actually been some use!

how can 300 cases of abuse justify anything, and this poor mare! i know what goes on at Llanbyther here in Wales, its sickening- and yes, there are many that are well looked after but that doesn't take away what goes on out of the public eye!!

I have never been to Appleby and so, don't propose to know what happens!

But from what I've heard I don't think I would want to go to Appleby... :(

Our mare came from the travellers in a really bad state, but then on the other hand, I know of travellers whose horses seem in better condition and are looked after better than some of the horses on DIY livery yards!

I don't think one group of people can maim the views of others but its such a damn shame about the cases that happen - which, lets face it, with an upped number of RSPCA officers and police, could have been stopped....
