Mare made me emotional today

I have a mare at the moment who was bred by a lovely breeder but fell into the wrong hands. She was so frightened she had broken someone’s arm out of fear, wouldn’t load, you could barely touch her without her trying to run away from the pressure.

Bit by bit she has come round, we can do everything with her, and even was a saint to have her teeth looked at the other day.

Today I sat in her stable catching up on emails sheltering from the weather. I was hunched over and she must have thought I looked rather vulnerable and she came and stood with her head over me as they would when protecting their sleeping friends in the field.

She stayed right over me keeping a watchful eye, and even nuzzled my head - I have to admit I did get teary! So terrible to think how someone could be so cruel to such a sweet animal. But I guess the point of this post is to reassure others that if you do have a difficult horse, the best thing you can give them is time, calmness and patience (oh and plenty of carrots!), especially at a time where we see so many reports of such terrible actions inflicted on these beautiful creatures that we have the privilege to be around.
 
I remember when I first had Lari.
He was in his stable and was kicking the door for his tea.

I stuck my finger in the air and said NO! very firmly. At the same time I thought I'd go in and grab his empty feed bucket. So I opened the door to pick it up and he ran to the back if the stable shaking. He had obviously thought I was going to smack him.

Such a shame, I'd never wallop a horse like that bit he obviously didn't know me well enough to know that then.
