Mare making noise when working....

Just been brought back into work after being used as a broodmare for a few years. She makes a noise when being worked, when i halt the noise stops, then starts again when she walks forward. I originally thought it was just because she is unfit but now i'm wondering if it is a respiritory problem as have been some white snot/discharge coming out of her nose?

Will call vet out, any advice in the mean time?

I had the exact same thing with my mare - she was also used as a brood mare before I got her. It turned out she has a problem with phlegm on her chest and she is just making the noise trying to cough it up. I gave her a spoonful of treacle in her feed and gave her some cough medicine. It has not completely cleared it up, but it has improved a bit.
Is your horse stabled at night? I found that dusty hay and/or straw made it worse, so I wet her hay and that seemed to make it a bit better.
