Hi, I'm hoping you can help with something I've not come across before. I have a new mare, a cob very laid back and low down in the pecking order. She was vetted properly. Over the last few days I have noticed her making a strange noise, almost like a quiet grunt. She's not cribbing (and I've only seen wind sucking when cribbing in other horses) She's not arching her neck, her head is often low when doing it and she's done it in the field as well as in the stable. Any one else come across this? I have the vet for jabs next week but she probably won't do it then!

Hi, welcome to the forum. :)

My Mollie makes lots of grunting noises when asked to do even the lightest work :p but I haven't noticed anything in the stable or field. Maybe someone else can help? :)

sounds very like the condition that my boy has, if so it's something to do with displacement of the soft palate - they cure it in racehorses by doing a tie forward surgery but it doesn't tend to cause issues in horses that aren't being worked at the extreme high levels. :)

I only really notice the gulping sound with my boy when he's stressed but if he's being a bit of a **** then in ridden work it's noticable in canter sometimes too.
