Mare or Gelding ?

just wondering what peoples preferences are :) me personally i prefer a gelding as for me they are much more straightforward and easier to deal in general :) obviously there are execptions :)
 
I always said I would never have a mare but now I have no preference. My mare is not at all mareish and is the sweetest horse in all respects. She has her moments but so do all horses. My last gelding was more of a mare than her lol he liked to eat people and was in general a bit of a grumpy stubborn bugger at times :o He would usually stand over his door looking very cute and inocent then once you (ie a stranger) went to stroke him he would strike, so not many people went near him ;) He would put his ears back at me and threaten to bit me but never did (well I did get bitten twice when we first got him but we hadnt bonded). He also took dislikes to certain people on the yard for no reason ie YO son and tryed to kick him once and the weird thing was he never kicked!!
 
Mares for me.

I have a gelding also (thankfully daughters pony), he's a pillock, grumpy, lazy and just a general all round knobber that drives me nuts, but she loves him :)

My filly is just lovely albeit fiesty, but she's also very giving and affectionate, no contest really.
 
Always Always a mare :-) ...... they are 'entire' gives them that edge.

Love my Stallions though !

How could you lot even choose!!!! Some brilliant geldings and beautiful mares have entered my life. I guess I must be lucky...

Didn't realise we had such high levels of sexism in the uk! :D:D:D
 
I've had 2 of each & I must say the geldings were sooo much more loving & had tons more character whereas the mares were both mardy arses that didn't even like a good scratch!! So its geldings by choice for me - or it would have to be one very special mare!!!
 
mares, always had them, and always got on with them well. I do now have a gelding, but only because that's what my mare gave me!! Having said that he's proving to be the most loveable character ever (even more so than his mum and i didn't think that was possible!)
 
I have a mare and a gelding and ride two others from Yard owner and realised that I prefer riding a gelding but groundwork I don't have preferences really.
 
Always wanted a gelding, have since ended up with mares!! thankfully my 3yo isn't mareish at all but she is a complete flirt and is becoming more affectionate, before you could stand and talk to her and when she had enough she'd walk off for some grass, now she has her favourite scratching places and even if your stood near her she will groom you or 'do' your hair for you in the hope it will get her some attention in return!! however this years purchase was a little colt foal so although the intention was to sell him on in a few years as we only bought him to save him from going through the sales, i will have my gelding at last!!
 
I am definitly a Mares person. My mare is mareish at times and FULL of character!
I'm not saying i don't like geldings, we have a couple at our yard that are wonderful. I always seem to click more with mares though!
 
Mares.

I think there is just so much more to them. They are more intelligent and loyal. If you get a good one they will do anything for you. Geldings seem to be a bit wussy and simple, not all of them but a lot.

I know very few marish mares. Most you barely notice when they are in season.
 
Mares!!
When looking for a horse (i was 11) Mum said we were not having anything welsh, young or female! And it was a 6 year old Welsh D mare we got :D

took us a year and a half to click, but once a mare loves you she's pretty loyal! Geldings are easy going and seem to love everyone ;) Mares are more choosy and the bond is so much better :p
 
I have one of each at the moment, but mares have always done it for me in the past. Current gelding can be lazy and a bit stubborn, but madam will go through hell and high water for me ;)
 
I love either, but if you get a good, honest mare then she will do anything for you without question, but upset a bad moody mare and she will do NOTHING for you - ever!!!!
 
The only mares I have ever rode were moody. I have a mare and a gelding shared with my little sister and I have warmed to the gelding, Danny Boy, he is sly, affectionate, almost bomb proof and funny. We have our ups and downs. :D
I will avoid riding the mare at all costs, she is stubborn, she used to nap, she's moody, jealous, a bully and my sister loves her. She is affectionate though and she will mope around with her head down and puts on a sad look in her eyes.
In my opinion, geldings win hands down.
 
Mares! They are the best so much more than geldings I always feel safe on a mare.I find you can really bond with a mare Sophie only behaves on the ground and ridden for me. I love Will to be he will never connect with me (or I with him) the way Sophie does. And be I Sophie ( first pony) I ride to mares who bucked everyone else off but I loved them. Mare rule:D!
 
Up to a month ago would have always said mares every time having been lucky enough to have two lovely mares in my life one of which is even a chestnut mare lol however recently got a gelding who is absolutely gorgeous too!
 
I have one filly, two mares and one gelding. I love them all, they are all individuals and very different from each other. Also none of the girls are 'mareish' and the gelding has lots of spark. :D
 
Sorry, but i have to be sexist and vote for Geldings. I have a lovely little 5 year old boy/it at home and hes sooo lovely, genuine honest and sweeeettt!!! Love him to bits! I had a mare as well who was his mummy, but had to sell her this summer as she was a nightmare, literally.... but i dont think she would put me off having another one though. Depends on the pony/horse. :) BTW his mummy is now a broodmare in Wiltshire, who would of thunk it eh?! :)

I've had six mares, none was mareish, moody or mean. Some were more affectionate than others but they all tried their hearts out.

Had a gelding once - never again. Lazy, thick and a bit handy with his hooves!

Ummm... as a gelding fan, i would say that your being the tiniest bit judgemental, i love my boy.... we had him gelded when he was about 18+ months old, as he was getting too interested in females!;) I think its more to do with the upbringing of the horse more than anything else... :)
