Mare or gelding?

What sort of work is it in?

What's your preference, generally speaking? I would always go for a mare out of choice (although would never rule out a gelding - I had one that i was totally in love with). But i have some belief in the saying:
"A bad gelding is better than a bad mare, but a good mare is better than a good gelding."

I tend to err towards mares and agree a good mare is hard to beat. I wouldn't be put off gelding but my best horses have been mares and I do seem to get on with them.

I put gelding because I have always got on better with geldings for some reason. I have one of each at the mo and the mare can be quite difficult! I can see why the good/bad saying would be said though,

I have three mares....so prefer them to own as I like to have an 'entire', but for this same reason, geldings are easier for novice riders.
I find mares don't put up with so much s*** on one hand, but you can get them more on your side so they can be better.

I prefer geldings - they seem to have more personality / character. Saying that though, since Murph died i now have 3 mares!

Dolly is FULL of character, but i think that's more to do with her being 12.2hh - little ponies are cheeky!

Mo & Moll are lovely, but just not as affectionate and are much more independent.

As a child i always rode very spirited geldings and loved them (there are only two mares that spring to mind) a welsh sec d called prinny that i used to ride at my friends and a welsh x arab dapple grey (rocking horse type) called dolly) other than that it was geldings in general and i had no time for mares.

in my opinion mares were like cammels... hissy spitty kicky nasty things best to be steered clear of.

When i grew up and started riding horse i wanted that little bit of extra spice/character that ponies have and i looked for and found it in mares.

i would not be without my madam now, even with all her mareish ways, (they are what make her).

I currently have two complelty different end of the scales mares. One who is so effectionate and will have a go at anything for me. She will follow me anywhere and is just lovely. My other mare is so uneffectionate and anti social and hates being near me! lol I've always had mares and will always have them i think.

Definately geldings - I just like them better. Mind you mine is quirky and has tantrums so we joke about him really being a mare with a willy! I also find my male cats more affectionate than my females.

I always said I didnt want a mare. I ended up with a mare.

I wouldnt change her for the world. She may be a madam at times but shes my madam.

When I get another im tempted to go for a gelding. Just because of the fact there are more independant and I will have less time. Thats not to say I wouldnt get a mare if the right one came along.

I have had both sexes and have had some really sharp geldings! it makes me think that if they were mares their behaviour would have been blamed on their sex!! if i was looking for something to sell on then i would go for the gelding, they are always easier to sell, for my self couldnt care two hoots! currently have one of each!!
