I have clicked mainly with stallions and mares but not so much with geldings. My last horse was a gelding and I adored him though. There are also many mares I can't stand due to the nasty faces that are constantly being pulled. Ok if its your own but I find it hard to put up with in other peoples mares. My current mare is terribly sweet natured and I could count on one hadn the number of times she's put her ears back! My new horse (if she passs her vetting tomorrow) is a mare

I chose mares, Iv only ever had mares, and the one I have now is lovely. I feel I have a special bond with her because Im a girl too...loser or what. But thats how I feel, I have my 2 'girls' my horse and my dog. We dont need any men

Geldings all the way. . .:D

Never wanted to buy a mare as i was worried i would get one who was tempremental or moody. .. but im sure that some are not like this

LOL at EquestrainFairy, I'm sorry.

Have had more mares than geldings so I voted that way but thinking about it I have no preference either way TBH.

Our last purchase was a mare but only because we already had 2 mares and they are both a bit territorial over boys!! Which I suppose means I should prefer geldings!!

And I always think that if all else fails you can breed yourself a new pony if you have a well bred mare.

Only had one mare but given the choice I would have another in an instant...having said that I've just got a new gelding!!! He's sweet and geldings are lovely geneerally, but mares seem to have a bit of something else!

I love mares have always had mares and find them very loving and honest if u have a good bond with them, otherwise they are little madams

Geldings for me evry time

,all the mares on our yard are neurotic idiots,lol...HOWEVER i did have a mare once and she was the best natured(always pulled faces but wouldnt hurt a fly),most willing mare i have ever known, she would potter round with complete novices on board yet would rev up with the more experienced...she was a chestnut tb mare too, lmao
grin.gif
,however the 2nd chestnut tb mare i had was absolutely nuts..tried to kill me on a few occasions, was no reasoning with her

(down to previous owner i believe

)!!
After having my big soft lovey dovey gelding and knowing most peoples are the same i will stick with the boys

It's 50:50 at the moment

I picked mares, having had both I find my mare more fun to ride as she's moody and never the same twice! I imagine that is a lot of people's idea of hell

Only ever had mares and if the next one comes off, from what I've been told thats a mare too.

Never ever set out to get either a mar eor gelding its just pure fluke really.

If I really had to chose I'd say geldings.
But really I love both - "my" horse at the riding stables is a gelding and he is known for being an idiot but I love riding one of the mares as well as she is so honest and doesn't put a hoof wrong.

Definitely mares for me. I have had a few cracking mares over the last few years. I just recently took on a gelding as a favour for a friend - and he was lovely - but just no where near as quick witted as any of the mares i have had. All the geldings I have had were either minus personality or a bit poofy!

I chose mares as all three mares I've owned have been absolute dolls. Never a nasty face or any horribleness about them. Just absolute lovelies.

The mare I have now I would never sell. She's got a home for life as I seriously think you'd be hard pressed to find a nicer natured mare & she also is a lovely riding horse.

Out of the three geldings I've had one was a total maniac & the devil incarnate.

He would pin you against a wall if you weren't careful in the stable with him.
He'd rear, buck, drop his shoulder in canter & gallop, bolt, pull like a train, kick, bite & was generally a complete little b@st@rd!!

He was a Shetland X & was sold to me as a first pony by a so called friend.

He went back 3 months later as he was just too unpredictable to have around. We tried everything with him & he was just awful.

So definitely mares for me, I seem to click with them better for some reason.

Yep. I would 100% agree with that

Mine at the mo is a Chestnut mare & I've never known a more honest or genuine horse.

I have one mare and one gelding and I'd always prefer a gelding. Whilst I love my mare and have such a strong bond with her she is nonetheless temperamental. When she was in work we had a nightmare time during seasons. She wouldn't jump etc. My gelding however is far more affectionate, doesn't pull ugly faces like she does, doesn't 'squirt' and create a mess down his back legs and is easier. The only reason I'd be tempted to get a mare is because if they are injured at least you can breed.

Mares everytime!

As the Olympic commentators said yesterday, a good mare, will give you more then a good gelding every time!

Geldings.....love em, loyal and loveable...saying that, I also have 2 mares ( well, one is OH, one is daughters but I look after them all)- find mares moody and messy, my gelding has got personality plus, but yes he also a bit poofy as well!!

Plus, he is much cleaner than the mares poofyness in him i spose LOL!!

I like them all, mares, geldings, stallions. When I worked at an arab stud, I had a fantastic bond with the stallions.

Its worth remembering that a mare is an entire horse, same as a stallion.

Geldings their either black or white, mares are various shades of grey lol!

I do think mares tend to be more affectionate and show more intelligence to a gelding, but they think way too much.

Geldings for me, mainly because Ive always had them. Ive only ever had 2 mares and actually if Im fair both were (/are - I still have one) extremely intelligent and I actually really liked the anglo arab mare I had a few years ago. But by choice Id always prefer a gelding. I dont think Id buy a mare as a competition horse unless I knew her simply because Ive known of some friends mares who are horrid when in season.

That's what I like about them. I like a horse with a brain, that thinks and shows intelligence!

Geldings are too dim and dopey to me

Have to say, I've always got on well & had a soft spot, with all the stallions I've owned or cared for too
