Mare Scan Accuracy

Similar probs been asked before but what are the odds of a vet miss reading a scan. My 20 year old mare was scanned in at 15 days then when scanned at 28 days it appeared she had lost the pregnancy from the scan I agree from what I saw on the scan monitor. How ever we are now at day 48 from last covering and she is yet to return into season. It's confusing me any suggestions as to what could be going on as I'd like to recover her this year. Advice or thoughts please. Thanks

Losing a good repro vet was just one of the reasons I 'retired' from breeding in 2018. Stuck with a bad 'un (who THINKS she's good) is far too much of a PITA and the wallet.

Here's 1: a malformed conceptus with a weak heartbeat - I should terminate and try again. I declined: it was too late in the season for that. At 60 days, it was a malformed 60 day conceptus with no heart beat! Wait for it:





And this was the result: Final Saga, born on due date (to the day) Oddly enough, ex-vet didn't thank me for the nice pic I sent her. And 2 years later - still doesn't look at ALL malformed - and nothing wrong with his heartbeat either.






In 2019, I let this mare go on breeding loan to a friend. After (expensive) AI, she was declared n.i.f., with fluid retention. She'd had the lot: washout, Caslicks, etc etc. Would-be breeder was told she was too old and had had too many foals, it would cost £1500 to give her a chance at pregnancy. So she came ome. What is she telling me now??

I'm quite optimistic about the likelihood of another vet getting a pic - she wouldn't be due until 2nd week of July!
