Hi there

My mare is 270 days pregnant and I don't think she is particularly big! She is 15.2 and stallion 16.3, her previous (1st foal) was small (same size stallion) she grew to 15hh, although we later found that the stallion produced a few small foals.

Her last scan was around 40 days. She has shown in season (just a bit, not fully fledged squirting, just a tablespoon or so) since before her last scan as I originally thought no way was she pregnant! But she was thank fully!

Sometimes she looks pregnant and other times she "sucks it up" (she always has very active stomach muscles, especially around feed time and times the yard is busy, she is naturally a worrier!)

Anyway, interested to see what you think or see your mare pics and how far along they are! Will post picture soon! :)

Here are a couple of pics-

there's still a way to go in terms of days left, but she's looking well, my maiden really didnt look pregnant right up to the day she foaled last year, she is quite long in the back so had plenty of room to 'hide' her foal, the vets kept saying dont worry and although the foal was slightly small when born, she's made up for it over the last 11 months. she's now standing around 13.2 and should mature around 15.3'ish. both mare and stallion are 15.2.

your mare looks to be quite a 'roomy' mare so she's poss hiding it well. she should show more over the next few weeks as the foal does the most growing in the last trimester which is where you are now. i would get your vet to come and check if you are worried about her at all, but otherwise just enjoy the changes that will follow.

One thing i would say is that your mare looks a more native/stocky type and i was told NOT to put my mare on stud diets just to keep a check on her weight with her normal feeds and make sure she had a powdered stud vit and min supplement, definately no balancers to make sure she had what was needed without over cooking things :)

I am sure you mare will have a beautify foal and look forward to hearing news of her little one

Sorry OP forgot to put a link to some pickies, i tried to keep a record of my mares changes over a period of time, hopefully the link to my photobucket pictures will copy across, http://i1115.photobucket.com/albums/k546/monkstc/teba8411b.jpg -

this photo was taken on 8th april, she foaled on the 8th may, exactly one month later and was spot on her due date, as you can see Teba my mare really wasnt very big at all, hope this helps reassure you :)

Thanks for the pictures - puts me at ease!

Thanks for the advice Bennions Field- she is an Irish Draught cross and holds her weight annoyingly well! She currently has grazing mask in the day (as huge field with lots of grass!) and ad lib soaked hay at night. I spoke with a couple of nutritionalist (3 in total) and they all recommended balancers so she is on Safe and Sound (lami suitable) and a small mug of balancer (dodson and Horrell ultimate balancer) - they said that as you only need a little it's ok to feed for the vits?

One did say to only feed in last month to ready for lactation but I went with majority who told me to start now … it's a mine field!

Very much looking forward to seeing who's in there! Hoping for a boy ( have two mares already so there's enough hormones around already!) don't mind tho as long as everyone ok!!

Meandtheboys - would love to see piccies when you have some.

Bennions Field could we some of your baby? I calculate my mare has 8 weeks left … will go slowly now I think :( thanks! X

Hi Hollyanna, sounds like you are on top of the weight issue, i too had to restrict my mare, she's a PRE (andalusian) so does very well on very very little ! least it doesnt cost much to feed her :)

unfortunately i dont have any more on photobucket as yet, I need to upload from the camera

I really cant believe she's already 11 months old ! she's around 13.2 now but they are all due to go onto the summer grazing field next weekend and i expect her to shoot up again - they are total and utter timewasters, but in the best way possible. enjoy the excitement of waiting, it will go by soooo quickly, you then will have hours and hours of wasted time just watching the little one - enjoy :)

What a lovely baby! I had someone today telling me she didn't look very pregnant - its so demoralising!! Lol vets up in two weeks to give her her jabs so at least I will know either way!!! She has 60 days left yet so plenty of time to beef up- here is pic of last foal - it was so long ago I can't remember how big she got but she lived out 24/7 last time so was much more relaxed but unfortunately we don't have any horses to go out with her now …

Bless, she looks lovely, and certainly looks bigger than squizzel did when she was born, I actually brought a 24" dog coat for squizzel to wear for the first couple of days, it was rather chilly for early may.

did you keep the foal ?

Ahh Squizzel, what a lovely name!!! How old would she be now? My girl is rising 7 this year (which is crazy as it only seems like five minutes ago!). Yes, I kept her, she was a little bit smaller than I would have liked (15hh) but in every other way she is what I wanted so I shouldnt grumble and I am only 5ft4! She has competed BD regionals, and is a machine to jump / x country.

Hoping the next one will be a little bigger and hoping to keep this one too, by the time the new baby is ready to be broken the other "baby" will be 10 rising 11 so maybe she will have a baby then, who knows she can be nanny to her brother/sister.

Here's a piccie for you of her now, are you going to keep Squizzel?

WOW! she's beautiful - a real stunner :)

Her proper name is Elegancia (spanish for elegance) I came up with the name squizzel as she spent the first couple of weeks charging around with her tail held up like a flagpole, just like the squirrels she chased up the oak tree in the corner of the field !!

She was officially for sale at weaning last September but i didnt get a single enquiry despite being advertised on the BAPSH website, think the market completely fell off during the summer. i plan to take her to the BAPSH show in july at hartpury this year and if she sells she will go to a nice new home, but if not she can stay a little while longer :) thankfully i have my own yard so it doesnt cost me any livery fees, just feed and hay. I've also got two oldies, a 29 year old and her son who is 21 ! so who knows how long they will be around for :(

its amazing how quickly time goes, it seems only a few years ago that my old mare had oliver, he's now 21 ! whats the due date for your mare? bet you cant wait !

This one is due around 14th June (safe time 29 May). To be honest I wasn't planning on another but the mare had an injury and needs a year rest and as we are at a livery yard (which costs an arm and a leg) we thought she may as well do something while she is off! - we really love the last one, so we will see!

Have a pic from today and a possible video of our baby moving (my mum (long suffering groom) thinks its just her tensing her muscles but I don't think it is ....) let's see if I can upload!

Names … the last baby remained nameless for far too long! Lol ;)
