Hi, Just a quick question really - This is the first time of owning a mare always had geldings.....So being pregnant I thought I would put her in foal but after March she didnt show any signs of being in season which I thought was weird but it didnt really matter, but now all of a sudden she has come into season with a BANG is this normal? sorry if its a daft question but Im not up to speed and was just curious.

I didnt put her in foal as she didnt have any seasons over the summer or certainly showed no signs of being in season but now she is having regular seasons and being a complete tart!!!! is it normal for mares to have active seasons in the winter?

Oh sorry; I assumed since this was in breeding, that she was bred LOL!!

All of my girls stopped having seasons a while ago.....however one boarding mare doesn't seem to have stopped having them since she arrived....and she is still having them now!

sorry Tia I put it in breeding as I thought that it would be where I would get the best answers......and also I cant understand why she didnt have seasons in the summer when I wanted to breed from her but she is having them now????

Yes I'd agree that is a bit weird.

How old is she? Can't remember if you said in your intial post. Oh and don't apologise; it was my mistake.

Were not quite sure to be honest I bought her in Feb as felt sorry for her she is a lovely girl but not had the best of lives...her feet were very overgrown and although she wasnt skinny she is scared to death of men, being ridden with whips etc - the guy we bought her from said she was 8 and that is what her passport says but in my reckoning she is more likely 18 has definately had foals before and is very maternal which is why when i got pregnant I decided to put her in foal but she just didnt have any seasons until now? she is just very motherly to me now so will have to be contented with my baby instead of a foal of her own!

Ahh if she is older, then no that's not so weird. One of mine (20 years old) spent her last 2 years here with no seasons whatsoever; even though she lived full time with my stallion and his mares. She moved about 3 months ago to a friends place and since being there she has had regular seasons and is only in with other mares and geldings; no stallions for miles. I do sometimes wonder whether she just didn't want to have another baby LOL!! Not that I would have bred from her but she was certainly handy to leave in with my guy.

My TBs showing in season today, very obviously, especially the filly. Probably wouldn't stand, though.

I'm told its all to do with day length, but I'm sure the weather affects them; they always seem to do it when we have a bright Spring or Autumn. On the other hand, in a bad year they aren't anything like as enthusiastic.

Also some mares show hugely for their first and last season, but are very quiet for the rest of the year!! Can make stud work interesting, when they absolutely will NOT show for the stallion, but when scanned they have a massive follicle!! So your mare most likely did have seasons throughout the year, she just didn't let you know!
