I bought my mare about a month ago.
When I first tried her I tested how good she is with having her feet picked out and she was an angel. I could leave her untied and she would stand still as.

She was also vetted and again she was an angel.

She continued to be good then a couple of weeks ago shes started acting up. She gets really fussy with me holding her hooves and will move around so I can’t catch her feet. When she does eventually pick her hoof up she’s quick to put it back down.

is she taking the piss out of me or is there something seriously wrong? Asked the YO and she thinks the first.

Perhaps she dislike the way you hold her hoof. Could you ask your YO to pick her feet up and see what the reaction is? If she picks her feet up willingly for YO check how YO approaches her and how she asks for the lift, then how she holds the hoof. If she consistently avoids lifting her feet for YO, it could be a physical problem..

I knew a horse with Cushing's who suddenly became very reluctant to pick up 1 front foot. Totally sound, no sign of pain in rather front foot with hoof testers. Turns out it was very early lami and he needed his prascend dose adjusting.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. After a day of panicking and researching and panicking turns out she is just being a cheeky mare!

I asked one of the more experienced girls to check her legs / feet over. I held horsey with headcollar on & lead rope while the other girl had a look. Any time she went to be naughty I told her off and worked a dream!

After riding I picked her feet out she was still being a bit cheeky but no where near the amount of walking around and avoiding / attempting to kick etc like she was before. Didn’t even need to have her tied up!! Thanks again ? x
