Naughty pony

After kicking my mother yesterday, dee threatened to kick me . I would imagine it is because i was bandaging her back leg at the time, but she hasnt done this for a while. Her ears were pinned back and muzzle tight. However, there is no heat in that leg and she is perfectly sound. It is over in a second and she is back to her lovely self.

So what do you reckon? Her seasons or just cockyness?

If any kind of pain is ruled out I'd say stroppy in season mare. That said tho, you know her best so depends on how out of character it is. If my oldie ever threatened to kick, if I didn't die of shock I'd be straight on the phone to the vets cos something would have to be agony for her to kick. If my friends mare did it tho first reaction would be to put it in its place as its always trying to push the boundaries & is even worse in season.

She isnt acting in pain, i have known her in pain and she becomes depressed, not kicky. She means these kicks the moment she does them but puts her ers forward and watches my reaction. :D I think she is testing me tbh.

Maybe she doesnt like the bandages im using :P

Ovaries !!! worth having scan if its out of character it doesnt cost much :)

Might be worth while.

Our mare is in season atm, every time we go through the same ritual - she kicks out, gets an almighty wallop, realises she's overstepped the mark, then doesn't do it again until next season!

If it doesnt calm down I'd get the vet to scan her ovaries. xx

Normally if its her ovaries she dips her back excessively if i touch it and goose humps it when ridden but shes the loosest shes every been.

I think she might just be feeling good. But i am booking her in to be AI'ed next may, so that might help her hormones

There are 7 mares on our yard and all of them are "delicate" at the mo... March/April is when oestrous begins again and the hormones start to kick back into action.

The more experienced mare owners on the yard tend not to do much at this time of year... I have just started riding one of them this year and she is super sensitive and threatens to kick me with ears flat back and bit me the other day. When two weeks ago she was an angel. Yes it could be a back problem, but I think period pains might be a good guess with Delicia. If it continues for longer than a week, I would be concerned.

My mare who is usually grumpy but doesn't usually do much except pull faces, suddenly kicked out at my daughter's pony as they were led in on Thurs night! They have led together for thrower two years with no problem! I am putting it down to her first season!

Have you checked that her udder is clean? I ask because the Appy gets all sorts of nasty gunk in there and fly kicks at herself, I assume when the skin gets pulled. Might be worth a look?

Ha ha!! Good idea YorksG, but I don't think my mare would let me anywhere near her tits! I'll check it when she's less errr... scary!

ahhhh whats the matter with you, borrow one of those suits the bomb disposal guys wear and you'll be fine:p

i'm thinking this unseasonably warm weather has sent them all extra hormonal this year:rolleyes: my big girl is really feeling full of herself at the moment, we've had lots of rearing in the field and general stupidness so i've not ridden her the last week:eek: I decided that i rather like life at the moment and don't want to spend easter in hospital!!!!

Ha ha same here. Went to get my madam in the other day to find her doing airs above the ground to an audiance. I had to chuckle. I've stuck to lunging and jumping on the lunge for the time being!

Back to original question. OP, only you know your mare well enough to perhaps understand what caused her kicking. All I can say is that despite my mare being a madam and prone to bouts of stressyness during her seasons, she has never once gone to kick me or threatened to during any procedure, poking or prodding. She will lay her ears back and pull faces but that's it. Maybe whatever you were doing at the time evoked some sort of pain response.

Just back from doing the mare, she had some fly bites on her udders that i have bathed, wondering if they are connected? She was good as gold today x

That's good to hear BH. I also gingerly looked at my mares and they were lovely and clean ( I usually sponge bath the area when I sponge the sweat off between her legs) so I will put down to "mare week" :D
