I have been to view and tried a potentially new pony…she was lovely and I’m considering having a vetting done BUT her name on her passport is what I believe would be a geldings name…( man’s first name followed by a male cartoon character)Ive checked the microchip number on the passport with the passport company and it checks out ,the description on the passport although done when she was 7 months and is now 4 also matches….ive contacted the breeder named on the passport and he was unhelpful to say the least … Will a vet come out just to check microchip details and would I be able to change passport name registered with Pet ID Equine …

If you get the horse vetted, they should (in my experience) scan for a microchip and match it with the passport as SOP.

They did that with the two horses I've bought in this country. One was at her breeder's, so I didn't have any concerns, but they did it anyway because like I said, SOP. The other one had a bonkers backstory, which was completely true, but I definitely wanted him scanned and his teeth checked to be sure he was who they said he was. When I arranged the PPE, the vet asked me if I had any particular concerns they should be on the lookout for, and I said, 'Yeah, his background is pretty weird so I just want to be sure his age and microchip info check with everything I've been told."

There might not be anything sinister about it. Someone could have given the filly a boy's name because they thought they were being funny. Or ironic. Or something. People are pretty weird. Never discount that.

Horses have traditionally been called 'Ginger', 'Midnight' 'Snowy', there really isn't a male/female split with names. Look at some of the Racehorse/SJ names, to see names that have no real connection to the horse but mean something to the owner.

Our bogof foal years ago was a boy but his passported name could be classed as female...female name then an extra name after... My children named him as he was a ginger and born within hours of our female ginger cat dying and so they wanted the foal to have her name within his so it could just be that this horse is named in honour or remembrance of a male.

Jack Naylor, top racehorse that’s a mare.

Re. Renaming, I bought a horse that had two names. One name and then underneath said formerly known as ….
I much preferred the former name. So I asked his breeding authority if it could be changed back and they said no because the new name was under a new authority and the old passport would have been destroyed. Didn’t fully understand but the former name is lovely and I will use it for unaffiliated competitions.
Just for you to be aware you might not be able to change it
