I have a 19 year old pony who has had two bouts of exhibiting large amounts of blood in her urine. The vet has seen her 3 times, scanned her twice and has consulted with other vets at the practice. All to no avail, the scans showed nothing untoward - apart from blood in the bladder - but no lesions, tumours etc. He scanned up to the globes of the kidneys. She is eating, drinking and behaving normally (bombing around her field etc) and is showing no obvious signs of pain. The vet suggested that it might be cystitis and so we put her on a first course of antibiotics for 7 days, this after a while seemed to return the urine to its normal colour, however about 3 weeks later the blood returned - scanned again and placed on a further 5 day course of antibiotics - although this reduced the amount of blood it did not clear it up, so i have now placed her on a 10 day course of equitrim. She has had blood and urine samples, both have come up with nothing out of the ordinary. The vet still suggests cystitis but is not 100% and seems baffled when i ask about other causes. I'm on the second day of antibiotics and so far no change, as you can imagine its very distressing seeing her bleeding like this.
Has anyone experienced cystitis in such an aggressive bout or do you think it could be something else? Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated as i'm tearing my hair out. Many thanks, Hannah

sorry to hear about your mare :( . A human with cystitis would have bacteria in the urine - and by the time it gets to passing visible blood the pain can be awful and you feel really ill. Would have thought it would be similar for a horse (?) Think I would be after a 2nd opinion tbh. Pls keep us updated. ((hugs))
