My maiden mare is 305 days with rather large edema,s around udder and spreading along belly, interfering with her hind legs. Vet out on sat, said to keep her out so she,s moving, she,s out in 2 acre field next to stables anyway. The edema,s are now rubbing when she walks so obviously she dose,nt want to move very much. I,m putting sudacream on them as they are very red and sore, hope this is ok. Is there anything I can do to make her more comfy? I bring her into deep bed at night with haylage but leave door open so she can hobble out again later. She,s eating, drinking ok.she has awhile to go yet poor thing.

It's pretty common (like us humans getting swollen ankles while pregnant) for milk related edemas. I'd do some massaging, as long as she tolerates it, and hand grazing to keep her moving. How's her udder development?

I had a mare who suffered quite badly a few years ago, very little to be done really apart from try to keep her moving, my mare was a maiden, sadly though she had a red bag delivery and we lost the foal.

Her udder is lost amongst the swelling but cold and hard, she lets me massage it. Just been out to check her, she has,nt moved from spot for couple hours, led her slowly in and put her in stable, where she has had a small feed of speedi beet and balancer, left eating haylage. Let's me apply sudacream but won,t let me massage. Should I force her to walk slowly around then? I,m scared her lack of exercise will do her harm..

Maybe ask about feeding her mild diuretics like cold tea or dandelions to help shift it a bit perhaps? Cold hose might make her a bit more comfortable and doing any stretching/massage type exercises on any part of her body that gets her system moving will probably help as much as walking without having to make her walk.

My maiden mare also suffered quite badly with edemas, from about 8 months in foal, i kept her out 24/7 and left well alone. The edema started (like yr mare) from her teats right along to her chest, she foaled on time with no complications at all to a lovely colt. Hope this gives you some reassurance :) just to add I too had the vet out just to confirm that it was edema and it seems edema is common in mares in foal.

Thank you for your replies. I was on phone to vet yest again as teats so swollen they dripped blood for awhile, scared me to death. Mare wasn,t bothered and allowed me to put warm cloths on and massage, she just kept eating. Vet said not too worry, pressure causing vessels to burst. Ok this morning, this is going to be a long few weeks!

I would be hot towelling her bag and massaging to try and help (which is what your vet has suggested) .. - are you sure it's not turning into mastitis? - also i would probably hand walk her as much as poss.... just make her move if she's not doing it herself!!!

Oedema is common in pregnant mares.. not normally something that causes a problem...

Good luck.
