My mare has started stopping when being led or ridden, like she needs to urinate but rarely does. She can stop 3 or 4 times in an hours ride and doesn't wee or if she does it's only a tiny amount. This is really unusual behaviour for her,and doesn't specifically coincide with being in season. Has anyone experienced this or have any thoughts please?

I'd get it checked out as a matter of urgency. In the meantime, try and collect a sample for the vet to run.

It may be nothing more than an infection - I would be concerned about a more serious problem though.

.

I agree - get it checked as soon as possible and insist that full checks are carried out. My old mare had bladder problems (bladder stones), and it's best to catch things as early as you can.

Is your mare's drinking source in the field as a trough that you fill yourself or has she access to a natural water source like a pool or something - natural water sources can cause bladder stones from the sand/ground at the bottom.

That is a good thought because they drink mainly from a natural source with a sandy bed. Thank you both, I will call the vet on Monday and get it checked.

Good luck with your mare. My horse had this a good few years ago and it was misdiagnosed for a while so unfortunately, led to more serious problems but if you catch it early it's better and of course veterinary science has moved on since my mare was ill.

Anyway, I'd be interested to know how you get on.

Best wishes,

Lara
