I've been looking at the marelines of our brood mares in more detail and found some interesting horses in them. I knew that our Gentleman x Iroko mare Whitney was from a good mother line (the first eight are all decorated mares) and that her mother has produced both her who is a ster mare, and her half sister who was central foal keuring champion and then i think 10th at the national foal keuring, but then i looked furthered back at the mares and found that her great grand mother is the full sister to the stallion Zuidhorn.
Anyway, this got me more interested to know exactly what the mareline/stud book numbers mean? And what the difference is between the merrielijn, fokfamilie for example?? I understand that one means mareline and one breeding family but what determines how they are given these and why do some have both and some are either merrielijn OR fokfamilie ? Our mare has a Holst stamm 49 number which i know is the holstein number but how do you know what is a good mare line number or is it just a case of looking into many pedigrees and know number keeps coming up and that relates to what you like.
Also, (well done if you're still following, this isn't coming out very coherently) but how do you find out more about the holstein marelines?
