Mares and Geldings together?

Personally I'd be very careful putting more than one gelding in with just one mare in case they started fighting over her - ours have done this over our little shetland mare (she's not really big enough for any of them to 'do' anything with her but it doesn't stop them!), she's now kept with my big boy and they're happy as larry!
At our old yard the mares & geldings were eventually split after 2 horrific accidents where geldings had been fighting - the herd was about 20 horses tho so needed splitting anyway really as it was a health hazard getting your horse out of the field especially in winter at bringing in time!

:) It is fine as long as they get on.

I keep mares and geldings (Boarding horses) separate as the geldings seem to get quite protective of the mares and it is a job to introduce new horses when I have a gelding that thinks the mares are his.

Also, as I am being paid to keep other peoples horses safe I don't risk unnecessary hassle, I don't subscribe to the "Oh let them get on with it" train of thought and prolonged argy bargy. Additionally it really upsets my stallion to see geldings with mares, I have enough paddocks to avoid injury, I juggle horses to suit everyone sometimes pairing up with my own horses, same sex fields work best for me.

my gelding is happier if he is in with mares, now i have them at home i have 1 mare & a filly in with him and so far so good - he is the boss but he is also the oldest and the only one in work plus he is MY boy!!
