I had marble inserted in my mare as her behaviour was causing concern. She hated me grooming her flanks and putting her rugs on.She pulled faces if I touched her sides. There has been huge improvement and Im really happy with her , she is much more content.Im really pleased I had it done and investigated rather than accept her as grumpy mare.
The question I wanted to raise was mounting her.I have noticed that she is now happy to stand when I get on ,she used to move off really suddenly . I assume that she was uncomfortable and that the discomfort with her ovaries has passed.Has anyone else experienced the same after having marble inserted or is it that her discipline has been improved.?
If anyone is thinking about marble option I cant recommend it highly enough.:D

Cant answer your question i'm afraid but I'm looking into this for my mare. I have only had her a few weeks so will see how things go but I am exploring options!

I was just wondering before the marble did your horse behave differently when in season and not? My horse is as you described when not in season on the ground but enthusiastic and forward going under saddle but when she is in season she is very loving and cuddly on the ground but will not work, it takes a ridiculous amount of effort just to get her to walk round the school. I feel bad because its not naughtiness she is just obviously very uncomfortable.
Is it a simple procedure? or do they have to go away to have scans etc? Was it expensive?

£86 for marble sedation and scan I think
Mine was complete stress head shes not cuddly but anxious and became more so.She had bad start 5 homes 2years and its took her a while to settle and trust us.She is poppet to handle but once on very sharp. She seems to be able to concentrate her shooling has improved which I think is down to being comfortable.
I suppose they all react in different ways to tell us they are having problems .Good luck with yours :)

Forgot to add very simple and painless procedure.Mild sedation place marble scan ovaries and few hours rest and all done

Floss was very noticably in pain when in season (which can last 10 days). Last year she was regumate and improved no end but it seemed to mess with her 'head'

Early Feb on her second season of 2010 I asked the vet about a marble. It was inserted after she ovulated so the cervix was open (needed two scans as was a 10 day season). She continues to have seasons but shorter and improved. She has missed the last two though and seems much happier and a bit less squealy.

So pleased you found a solution and managed to make her comfortable. As you say, they have a number of ways of telling us they're not happy, but by gum it can be trial and error figuring out what it is and how to best deal with it! Well done hun :)

How is the marble meant to work? Wouldn't the body see it as a foreign particle that could cause infection (I mean antigens attacking it)

It tricks the body into thinking its pregnant would that be similiar to our coil(dont need contraception so not in the know anymore). The body thinking its pregnant doesnt produce hormones. The marble is literally childs marble sterilized which doesnt break down. Its left in for breeding season.

The marble has given us both more confidence:)
