A post from earlier made me think of my hormonal mares behaviour this spring. I am interested if anyone else has ever noticed this.

My mare is quite hormonal on times, not nasty. She just comes into season alot for afew days at a time and pretty heavilly. I will spare you the detail

Around march this year when the weather became unusually warm i noticed she had been biting the tops of her hind legs, in identical places on both legs. She hadn't made it sore just literally taken small patches of hair off.

I spoke to my vet and he said its quite common and to do with her hormonal glands etc

She stopped it a few days later and didn't repeat it again. She hadn't ever done it in previous years.

I am just interested to know if anyone else has ever had this as until my mare did it its not something i was aware of.

Experiences and advise welcome :)

hi

it was right at the top of her femur , identical patches on both legs.

the vet said it was to do with a hormonal gland around that area.He had had alot of calls in a short space of time of mares doing it. he put it down to the weather being so up and down, said mares can get confused/frustrated with it. He said to keep an eye and contact him if it got worse but she just stopped it. I will be looking out for it again this year
