Sorry to bombard you all with questions but here's another one.

I want to try and keep a diary of my mare's season so that I can work out where she is in her cycle. I think early in the year like this, things are a bit all over the place, but might as well start somewhere.

Vet scanned mare on Thursday as part of pre-breeding check. He saw follicles starting to grow. Mare seemed to take one look at the repro vet and instantly came into season, raising her tail and wee-ing! This weekend she has become her seasonal hysterical self, neighing wildly and generally behaving like an idiot. If vet saw follicles and she is behaving like this, whereabouts in her season do you think she is?

I have tried looking at the online diagrams about the different hormones, but none the wiser!

I wouldn’t bother trying to guess yet tbh- it’s really too early to get a settled and reliable gauge unless she has been under lights.
If she was coming into a true season then she should have had one large dominant follicle visible on the scan with associated oedema in the uterus. I would look again in 3 weeks if you’re wanting to breed for an early foal

Thanks. I'm not planning on breeding early, just thought I would start getting my head round her cycle. Definitely wouldn't want a foal to make an appearance on a frosty night, so waiting till May.
