As the title, really. My TB mare (who I keep at grass livery) has been moved to pasture with an arab gelding who suffers from sarcoids. He has one on his wither and one on his chest which are well-manged by his owner but do keep coming back. Does anyone know how infetious sarcoids are and if I should be worried for my girl? Would you ask her for her to be moved?

Technically they can be carried from horse to another by a fly getting into a nick or wound on a horse after being on an scarcoid that is 'open'
I had no idea that this could happen until I had a horse with them and the vet told me ,the key word was technically .
She advised that we put a thick cream on the sarcoids when he was turned out and gave a excellent antiseptic barrier cream to use I can't remember what it was called but can find the tube( I think ) if it helps.

My own observations, without reading anyone elses findings. Out of my seven horses kept together (all different breeds) five have had sarcoids including the donkey. Therefore I would say they are contagious and spread by flies or something else in the environment. Mine are all clear all the moment. I suppose for you though it depends on the type of sarcoid and weather there are any open wounds on the Arab, there are about four different types by the way.

As Goldenstar says take special care if your horse acquires wounds in the fly season.

Thanks for the link - its very informative although the photos are pretty grim. Glad to say the Arab has nothing that bad, but I will have a word with his owner so that she lets me know if and when he has another breakout. I was just eyeing up a new flysheet for the summer so now I have a proper reason to spend the money, not just cos I though her old one was a little tatty!

IF your horse is predisposed to sarcoids, then technically yes it could develop a sarcoid by fly transference, especially if your horse has a wound.

If your horse is over 9 y/o and hasn't had a sarcoid yet, it probably won't so a good chance it is not predisposed.

This, great reply :)
