this is my first time of putting a mare into foal. what is the best for her regading turnout, as she is the only mare in foal. i have other mares she can go with or am i best putting her into a seperate paddock while she is in foal.

Ours in the early stages stayed with the other mares but from about 6 months onwards the pregnant ones are moved to their own paddock which will then be seperated down to smaller paddocks so that the new mums and babies get their own bit. Then when all mums have had their babies we will put them all in together.

Mine are kept within their herd until a month or two before foaling. I like to integrate them back into their herd again within a couple of weeks of foaling.

i'm in the same situ as you Captin. i asked the stud whats best re turnout - ie if needs seperating from geldings etc and they said that they should be fine together unless you have a nasty mare, rig type gelding or a bully in there?
i guess you just have to judge who she can be out with ? in my opinion - i'm going for the option where she can be out the most on the larger area - hence trying to keep together.
good luck with everything

thanks everyone. i think i will keep her on her own but right next to the ther mares. mine is the only one who will be in foal. good luck to you to luckilotti. im sure i will be on here a lot in the next 11 months+++ asking questions. please all bare with me. i am so excited.

Ours actually go out with the whole herd bar the stallion, but are often in the next field to him. A month before foaling we move them to fields with just other in foal mares.
If you have a choice stick to mares only, or her with just one other mare.

I was lucky enough to have help from the vet at Pottes Bar, who was responsible for breeding, when I started my stud. He used to tell to upset the mare as little as possible and to turn her out with companions she was used to including geldings rather than stress her by changing her routine. My infoal mares live in a herd with all bar the stallion.
