Mares in season!

A mare I ride for her owner is an absolute nightmare to ride when she is in season! She becomes very lively, very distracted and today I couldn't even canter her in the school without her bucking and leaping around! Not had a lot of experience with mares who behave badly during seasons and just wondering what everyone can suggest would be a good thing to do? I have discussed it with the mare's owner and groom but we haven't made a decision yet. She mostly Hunts and the Vet has suggested giving her 2ml of Sedalin before Hunting to 'take the edge off her'. Not sure if there is anything else she could have/we could do to help her settle? Would Bute help if she is feeling sore?
 
I would not hunt out a horse that's had sedalin but I would probably try the bute or danilon see if it helps. Might just be pain.

Very right! And if her ovaries are clear, then she should be put on Regumate - it's not cheap - but stops them coming into season - and the silly behaviour the hormone rush can cause.
 
I use Agnus Castus with my mare, use it all summer and take her off of it after her last season of the year and it makes her normally OTT season behavior almost non existent.

I think its one of those things though that it works for some horses and not others.
 
It's highly irresponsible of the vet to suggest Sedalin for hunting!
I would have thought that most mares would have stopped cycling by now, but, I suspect due to it still being quite warm, that many are still going strong - I know both the mares here are! With any luck, she'll go into winter mode soon, and your troubles will be over!
 
Thank you, I agree with the Sedalin comments as personally it isn't something I would choose to do. Will suggest about getting her scanned/trying regumate to her owner. Thank you :)
 
I feed DH Stroppy Mare, one scoop all year round and everything remains peaceful.

I used to ride with someone who gave 2 x 25mg acp tablets to her hunter, horse was much calmer. So calm it failed to read the first fence and fell knocking out the two front teeth of it's owner.

Sedatives are useful, leading out a box rester or stress head. I use it to keep the daft one calm when the hunt is around, but taking a horse hunting on sedatives is unwise.
 
Mine is still in season and seems to have been fairly constantly (with perhaps a few odd days off) for the last two ish weeks. Its driving me bananas. Im hoping its just her last season of the year and soon will be all over. I took her off Oestress too early thinking she was all done for the year, then within days she became the biggest tart ever - seriously it was pretty much X-rated !!! With what ive spent this year on Oestress and lots of other herbal supplements, I had may as well had her on Regumate. Luckily the vet has agreed to Regumate so I think next year i will admit defeat and put her on it. Shes had 2 foals (previous owner) so is very much that way inclined, so is very very difficult when in season. I didnt realise the warmer weather would prolong things - so for the first time in my life, Im looking forward to a drop in temperatures
