Mares or Gelding??

I like mares.
I like geldings.

Mares are full colour, personality and drama.

Geldings are pastel and are boys who never grow up.

Mares can be delicate flowers with full on moodiness.

Geldings can be delicate flowers with slightly less moodiness.

You don't have to clean Mare's sheaths.

Geldings...there are just some things one male doesn't do to another male.

Currently, I have no use for geldings, the one I do have is a pet but also does a sterling job as a nursemaid to the weanlings.

I do have geldings here, as Boarders, and quite frankly, they are a pain in the butt. Without exception, individually, they are lovely chaps, but put them in a field near any of my mares and they turn into the equivalent of teenage boys in a playground scrapping over girls.

My riding horses are mares, I didn't even look at geldings, they just don't fit in with the direction I am going at the moment.

I have had geldings in the past, so would never discount them if they ticked the boxes, one of my all time favourite horses was a gelding, but he had a job to do and at the time he was the right horse for me.

I find that anyone can sit on a gelding and enjoy him, but few will sit on him and get such an affinity with him like you do if you find the right mare!

Every horse that i can vividly remember was a mare, i just sit on some mares and you can really really tell when they like you. I think its the mothering/ prtotecting instinct they must have like all females!!

I love my mare to death, shes the only one in the field that will not just trot or walk to call but will flat out gallop! She can be so bloody affectionate but wont let anyone walk over her :/ Mares are much more loyal than geldings. I think mares have more personality too, theyre more like a normal person, were not naturally supposed to b in a good mood 100% of the time!!

So yes, defo prefer mares :)

ooo i also find this quite interesting...

All my best friends in life have been female. I go out with the girls and literally dont have any male friends other than my OHs friends. I prefer mares and seem to get on with them better.

My friend at my yard, also female, but she is one of the lads, has more guy mates than girl mates and prefers geldings.

So i asked around and everyone i asked seemed to agree. Human/animal doesnt seem to matter.

Might just be conicidence but thought it was quite interesting!!:D

My current horse is a mare and I've owned her for 3 years. She is my first and last mare! However. this beautiful, haughty madame has taught me more than any other horse I've had. Patience patience and more patience. She has a huge personality and is very bossy but trusts me completely. She will try her hardest most of the time to please but like most of us females is ruled by her hormones, but that's not her fault. Yes she does frustrate me at times but I have to dig deep and drop to a level of calmness I didn't pocess as a youngster. She surprises me every day as no two days are the same. It is a bit like being on a roller coaster ride but fun and rewarding. Kisses and cuddles one day, ears back and leave me alone another. A bit like me I guess lol

Gelding!! My last mare was way too madam-y and bolshy, every day was a mystery depending on her moods!! My gelding is friendly, polite, full of character and always in a good mood and ready to do his best for you - he is GORGEOUS!! :)
Both our dogs are female though.....They keep the girly numbers up in a male dominated household!!! :p :p

Until we bought Fany it was geldings all the way for me. However, until today, Fany has never put a hoof wrong, her seasons are never a problem and she has the gentlest, kindest nature never lifts a foot or bites anyone. She is an angel ( bl**dy literally if she tanks off again) and I would have another mare. However the one thing I would say she has cost us a fortune in vet's bill whereas Captain, our wossy WB gelding has cost virtually nothing.

I have a gelding.
He is temperamental, grumpy and things are done on his terms. He has a huge personality and a LOT of attitude.
I love him.

I had a mare.
She was cuddly, a real trier, friendly and a stress head, could be a pain in season.
I loved her.

My current riding pony is a mare, and she is a saint.

So I don't really mind. If its the right horse for me, then mare or gelding makes no difference.

I have one of each and prefer my mare to be honest, she is far nicer and more affectionate than my gelding he is grumoy all the time and has major strops for no reason, my mare is even tempered most of the time but when something upsets her thats it. even then she is easier to deal with than the old git!

Mares, have always got on better with them. Tend to find once you have a partnership, they will do anything for you, plus I find their 'spark' great fun! You have the option of breeding from them when you find a really good one as well.

I like and get on with both, though I do adore stallions and colts :)

Ideally, since it's usually impractical to keep a stallion if you don't have your own land I like geldings which were cut when they were 3/4/5- they just have that extra spark about them, and they think like stallions but without the hormones!!!

Some geldings cut young do have the spark though, my present one certainly does!!!

I suppose I'm just a big slut really ;) I like any horse of any sex :)

Only ever personally owned geldings. The mares we've had....whilst 3 out of 4were lovely in stable, and 3 out of 4 (anomalie not the same horse!) had a lot of attitude when being ridden.... Should I need to look for a horse anytime soon, it will be a gelding!

I think mares get a really bad press, very unfairly at times. If they misbehave they get blamed for being hormonal or a " bl**dy mare" i.e. gender base for their behaviour. If a gelding misbehaves, no one says "he's just being a gelding".

^So true! :D

I like to judge horses individually. I have had geldings in the past but I now have two mares and a filly. They are all very different from each other but none are difficult when they are in season although my chestnut did take a fancy to a bay TB gelding that we used to ride past. I had to not let her stop as we passed his field because she would pee at him if she came to a halt. :o He did his best to encourage her mind, by galloping along the fence, leaping about and screaming at her, so she was pretty well behaved considering his antics.

Bay mare, elderly, retired ex-racehorse. Calm, kind and fantastic with anyone on the ground. She knows what she's doing and if you mess up she carries on doing the right thing.

Chestnut mare. A bit of a worrier and looks to her handler/rider for confidence. You have to be very calm and sure of yourself around her. Was quite nappy in the past but she has improved so much, even with the uber scary alpacas. :D Wont let anyone she doesn't know catch her. Has been hit in the past (from the ground and when ridden).

Grey filly. Confident, pushy, loves fuss and is very sure of herself. When dogs try to chase her, she'll show them the field exit very quickly!

I have one of each, but am definitely a mare person. He loves me more, is always happy to see me and snuffles at me. She really couldn't give a damn as long as she is fed, but give me a mare any time.

I've a gelding, mare and a filly.

Not sure how I ended up with the gelding because I much prefer mares.
He's to become my daughters so works out well as I find him rather dull, he's a lovely fella but can be grumpy and lacks that spark that I find mares tend to have.

Dont think I'd ever buy a gelding again, had 2 now and both the same.

I think if you find that bond with a mare, its far more rewarding than it is with a gelding.
They give their all, and just have a spark about them, I also find them far more affectionate than geldings.

So mares all the way for me :D:D:D:D:D

Glad to see so many think the same, I expected more replies for geldings but I'd say more replies so far opt for mares :D

another vote for mares here :D
i find them so intuitive and affectionate. Dont get me wrong, when my mare is in season she is bloody hard work but i find i can 'tune in' to mares better-they are very human, well mine is anyway!!

Mares for me! They give just that little bit more in every department. I have also been lucky to have a mare not to show seasons (until she had a foal that is!) but still the same loveable , respectful mare at all times :)

I LOVE my mares, and have only ever had one gelding who was 'special', but my word he was neurotic (anglo-arab ) and very feminine :p

One of my current girls is very moody and hormonal about wanting to be left alone in the field one day/demanding a fuss the next, etc, you could certainly call her marish, but she is very consistent in her ridden work and has a loyal, brave heart. My other mare, well I've never known her be hormonal/moody at all. She is ALWAYS pleased to see us and keen to please.

I also only have female dogs.

That said I am contemplating considering geldings in my search for my next horse! :o

I am a gelding girl at heart - preferably ginger and tall :P but have just bought a mare who is very nice but not my cup of tea at all relatively little and bay but I am hoping it will put me off keeping the project :)

well, I have 2 mares and a gelding. I absolutly adore my mares, have a really strong bond with them, and they appear to adore me. My gelding however couldn't care less who is around, so long as he gets what he wants. He is simpler, is great fun to ride etc, but it's about so much more than just riding so mares all the way for me.

That said, one of my mares is heavy in foal, and I couldn't care less what she has so long as both mare and foal are healthy.

I like both, but my horse of a lifetime is my mare. She is so full of character and so touchy feely. I thnk you get a much closer bond with a mare. Get a good one, and they would jump off the edge of the world for you.
