Ok so my mare (5) came into season 2 weeks ago sunday - squirting at the (extatic) gelding in the next field.... all settled down.... until y'day/today

Shes back in season again - squirting etc... gelding is made up, nibbling her, pawing the ground and just constantly whinnying at her.... (its over the fence btw its individual turnout)

Is this normal to have seasons so close together?

My mare is evidently a total tart, standing at the fence wanting to be round him all the time...

Appologies if its a stupid question but ive always had geldings - and this mare thing is baffling :o

Also please dont suggest regumate straight off as i dont want to be messing with her seasons/the cost and also shes lovely and dosent really need it - as every other way shes sort of lovely! :D

thanks :)

My mare has been bannished to the field and havent even attempted to ride the snotty little cow for the last week! x she's too miserable and unco-operative! x worst one of the year at the moment! x no point hurting her sitting on her ovaries! x just leaving her to be a tart! x

Thanks for the replies :D

Shes normally ok but she will be lunged/long reined for a couple of days as she was an evil b1tch the other day when tacking up (now i know why!)

normally shes lovely but she has been getting abit funny i should have clicked! I wont ride her but shes not staying out of work as shes getting into a good routine now and finally getting fitter :)

Most people still ride, i just don't cuz mine is clearly uncomfortable and refuses to jump even a 1ft crosspole! x she usually does 1.10m easy but shes horrid at the moment so she's having a week off! lol x

my mare will come into season at the drop of a hat:rolleyes: had new pony gelding arrive on thurs and the tart went straight into season, a friends gelding has come to stay while friend has an op and mare now doesn't know who to squirt at first:rolleyes:

My mares season is every 3 weeks too. There are usually 1 or 2 days where she's clearly uncomfortable and I don't ride her. She's not nasty but does have raving lunatic tendancies, add that to the strong will of a Welsh D mare in season.........

However, I have started using the mare blend from Natural Horse supplies and her tarty behaviour is better this time round and only 1 day of lunatic actions :o

My mare was vile last year when she was 4 - it was her first summer after being backed and I think she just had trouble remembering she had to concentrate on me when she would rather think about boys! I put her on Oestress and it seemed to help quite a lot.

This year she has been a total poppet because she is now a grown up 5 year old girl - I haven't heard a peep out of her about it all when I'm handling her. She sometimes "presents herself" to the geldings over the fence but never lets it intefere with her work.

I've heard good things about Oestress from others too but appreciate it doesn't work for everyone. It is relatively inexpensive and easily available, I used the liquid rather than the powder.

I have oestress.... bought it a while back but she refused to eat her feed because that was in thre! however since then shes now on vitamins so has garlic to disguise that... so will pop some in as of tomorow to see if that helps her :)

shes fine to handle/ride (she has her moments...) but shes more fiery when being ridden/lunged lol (bucks/broncs)

I have a 2y.o, she`s chestnut, has been battered about a bit by old owner and has come into season :D To say our time together is interesting is an understatement :D
I think they last from 4-10 days every 21(ish) days so lots more fun to go yet :P

I also have a pba who to put it lightly is a slut :) she squirts at cows/dogs/trees

The grumpy CB is actually happier when in season so she`s a pleasure to be around :)

my mares the same oh dear she is such a tart.was hacking her once and she seemed in a good mood with her season.then somebody was riding towards us on a hack down narrow lane.she went sideways-tail up and presented herself to this rather bemused man on his horse.the mans horse was a bloomin stallion and i then had to act rather quickly to get her turned round.the man on the stallion thought it was very amusing.

im so lucky as though my mare is constantly tarting and squirting at any male around she is never mareish - when i rode her in first 2 years i was sympathetic to her seasons - come on girls think how you feel when its that time of month - but she as always been kind. and she as been to a stallion before i bought her ( sadly her foal died full term inside her )
so she really knows what its all about lol oh baby you are such a tart xxx

You have my sympathies!

My mare is continuously in season at the moment as we've had new geldings arriving at the yard every couple of weeks for a while - its like riding a horse with no brain - she is totally unable to focus... Her loveliest habit is rubbing her, ahem, "lady-bits" ever so gently backwards and forwards on her hanging salt lick (ouch!). I would take it out or put it on the floor but part of me thinks she must like it so.... (shudders..)

Have started her on Oestress in the last couple of days to see if that helps - fingers crossed...!

According to 'the book', mares ovulate every 21 days! They are 'in season' for an average of 5-7 days before they ovulate!

THAT's what it says in 'the book'! My vet says mares don't read the book - I think they read it, then throw it in the air and say: "Ha! So THAT's what she thinks! Let me screw with her mind a bit!"

My vet scans a mare and says: "She has a 50mm follicle, she's ragingly in season, cover her today!" Oh yeah! Mare is introduced to stallion and amidst squirting and winking, she tries to rip his throat out and kicks the wall like a bad tempered mule!

It is worth remembering that winking and squirting does not necessarily mean that a mare is in season - it can be submissive behaviour. We regularly observe our 'in foal' mares showing in season - they're not - because they're pregnant!

Thanks all :D

shes been an absolute cow recently trying to bronc with me today on board - im not happy :(

I will lunge her tomorow until she decides to calm the f-down and chill out !!!

why oh why did i buy a mare!! :D
